The game will be played at the Recreation Complex on Thursday, February 19, at 6:15 p.m. Game one of the scries was played in Trenton on Tuesday. Sup, Supin', Away Ice Racer Competes For the "Fun of It" by Brad Kelly Staff Writer If you're categorized as a "white knuckle" driver when snow and ice cover the roads during the winter months, then stay as far away as you can from getting behind the wheel at the S.T.P. Ice Race Championship Series. If, on the other hand, racing at high speeds with 30 other cars on an icy track during a Saturday afternoon sounds exciting, then you have something something in common with Aaron Christie. Six-Week Series The Bowmanville native is among 100 drivers from across the province who compete in the six-week racing series that is held at the Minden Fairgrounds beginning in mid-January and ending in March. Sanctioned by the Canadian Automobile Spoi l Clubs, the scries includes drivers as young as 18 and as old as a woman who competes competes on a regular basis at age 60. Although points arc earned, standings standings are kept, and series champions are recognized at season's end, the majority majority of the drivers, including Christie, are in it for the fun. "No one takes it loo seriously. It's something I do for fun," said Christie, a graduate of Bowmanville High School in '93. "There arc some who do take it seriously, and you can tell who they are. But they don't look like they're having any fun, so you wonder why they bother. Most arc involved just to have a good lime." Christie first began racing five years ago at the age of 18, but took time off before entering the scries again this year. Now 23, he estimates a season of racing costs about $1,000, which includes tires and entry fees. The scries is probably one of the cheapest forms of racing there is, he noted. And getting started is easy. "If you have an old car sitting around that you don't know what to do with, you can take it to Minden, put a number on it, and go racing," he says. There are a number of different classes, including ones for studded tires. Races range from eight to twelve laps. Christie's 1981 Toyota Tercel competes in the Front Wheel Drive 1400cc class. Crazy One of the unique aspects of the scries, is that passengers arc permitted to go along for a ride. Which begs the question: Who's crazier, the driver or the passenger? "It's not hard to find a passenger willing to go for a ride," says Christie with a laugh. Which means there really really may not be an answer. BORN TO BE WILD - Bowmanville native Aaron Christie (foreground) spends some of his weekends in the winter racing a car around an icy track in the S.T.P. Ice Race Championship Series that is held at the Minden Fairgrounds. DUNN'S Just A Few Days Left cIÜrêWINTER sale BRAND NAME MERCHANDISE ON SALE! 1 /2 PRICE MENSWEAR! Game one of the scries was played last night in Trenton (after Statesman deadline). The second game of the scries is Thursday night in Bowmanville at 6:15 p.m. Game three will be in Trenton on Friday night, with game four shifting back to Bowmanville on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. It came down to the final night of the regular season on Sunday before opening round playoff matches were decided in the Eastern Conference. Trenton, Aurora, Newmarket, and Bowmanville were jockeying jockeying for positions three through six. Bowmanvillc's 5-3 loss on home ice on Sunday night to Kingston dropped them to sixth position, with Trenton finishing in third. The top eight teams in the conference advanced to the post-season. Ironically, the same- scenario unfolded last season season on the final day of the regular . season with Bowmanville and Trenton. A Bowmanville victory vaulted them into the playoffs, playoffs, leaving Trenton on the sidelines. For Bowmanville, they will be looking for their first playoff series victory since joining the Provincial Jr. A league three seasons ago. In their first year, they were swept in four straight games by Goodyear Midgets Eliminated The Goodyear Midget Toros went down 3 games to l to their arch rival Peterborough Nationals. Although the Midgets gave it a good fight, the fast skating Nationals were just a little more than the Clarington boys could handle. With the exception of game one where penalties caused the Toros to play 5 on 3, for 12 minutes, opening the door for Peterborough to score five power play goals. The remaining games were decided by two goals or less. The Goodyear Midgets now drop down to York Simcoe play-offs with a round robin series against Oshawa and Ajax. Game one was played in Oshawa Tuesday night and ended in a 5-5 score. SCOREBOARD Provincial Jr. A League Eastern Conference Ruddock Division GP W L T Pts. QUESTION: Telma, how can I tell if my orthotics are doing their job? The job of an orthotic is to try to help distribute the weight going through the foot in a more biomechani- cally sound manner; in a way that minimizes the strain to the feet and to the rest of the body. There are tests we run in clinic to see if an orthotic is performing its job. People get orthotics for various reasons. For some people it is because they have sore feet, for others because they have sore knees, and for others because they have sore backs. Orthotics help with these conditions by helping the person walk in a more supportive, better aligned manner, so they are less apt to strain the tissues ol their feet, knees, and back. In clinic, there are two things you are looking lor when you are testing an orthotic, whether it is a new pair of orthotics that the patient has just received from us, or whether it is an old pair that they are bringing bringing In for testing to see if they require a new pair. The two things are: A) Is it alleviating the patient's condition; and, B) Is it doing its job ol redistributing the weight in a more supportive manner. For the second aspect we do balance test. For example, with the patient's orthotics off you ask them to stand on one loot and then on the other loot and compare the steadiness ol both feet. With everyone you will find that ono loot is not as steady, we note that and then we have them put the orthotics on and compare compare It they are more steady, Another test which Is especially good lor pooplo with knoo pain is that you have tho person stand on one leg again and then bend the knee and see how their knee feels with that. Then once again, with the ortholics on you have them do the same test. Not only will that give an idea of how •steady they are balance- wise, but it also may give e-afig ' an indication in re-aligning the pulled knee joint, does it change the pain component component for that patient. So, then balance is a very critical test because with an orthotic, by realigning realigning the foot, leg, and nip better by giving it more support you are going to see belter balance with a patient, that is what you are looking tor in an orthotic. Now, the second factor is flexibility. A good flexibility flexibility test especially for patients who are coming in with back pain or back stiffness stiffness is to have them bend over and touch their toes with the orthotics oft and also to bend sideways to the right and then to the left. Then compare these three movements with the orthotics on. If the orthotics are doing the proper job, you find that flexibility improves a little bit or that it is a little bit easier to go down again by supporting the feet and giving a better foundation for the back. You should note a somewhat somewhat better flexibility with the orthotics on. What you do not want to see Is that ' with the orthotics on they are less flexible because what this can indicate is that the orthotics are over correcting the patient and causing tension in the loot, knee and back muscles. When I see this.in a patient I advise them to consider getting their ortholics upgraded because later on It could lead to problems up the chain, The ortholics are over corrected it they decrease tho mobility ol a patient, Grant Physiotherapy Is located at: 214 King St, E„ Bowmanville (905) 623-2783 PUTTING PEOPLE IN |$
