Temporary Driveway a Jarring Experience Rough Ride to Newcastle School by Laura J. Richards Staff Writer Since the new school in Newcastle opened its doors, parents, staff, bus drivers and visitors have wondered about the condition condition of the driveway. Regional Councillor John Mutton has been trying trying to find a solution to the problem which has been jarring every vehicle and its passengers. Councillor Mutton says, "if this road was one of ours, the school board would certainly let us know about it." On Wednesday, Feb. 18, the councillor heard good news from Clarington's Public Works Department. "They (District #14 School Board) arc going to keep the road graded and they will keep an eye on it," Councillor Mutton said. "I am strongly encouraging encouraging them to put on a hard top," he added. Mark Galonski, controller controller of Plant for District 14, says the local school has been given the authority authority to call in a contractor to grade the driveway as required. "This year is particularly particularly bad because of the unusual hot-cold swings we've had," he said. The long-term solution is a new street which will lead to the school and be located cast of the building. building. However, the construction construction of that street depends upon approval of the subdivision proposed for the vacant land alongside alongside the school. Once the construction proceeds, the street will be the first priority, priority, Galonski said. The road/driveway goes from Beaver St. South and loops around the south side of the Newcastle Public School property up to the cast side of the school. Newcastle Public School Principal Susan Medd told The Statesman about 300 vehicles use the temporary road on a regular regular basis. The cars belong to parents parents dropping children off at the day care and school. There arc also three buses, one handi-transit bus, along with staff members' vehicles, Medd said. Over the past few weeks, the road has been graded by the construction company that has been installing underground pipes for the Esso station on Hwy. 401 cast of Newcastle. Willie Woo, a parent of a child who attends the school, says the driveway/road driveway/road "is just like a washboard." He would like to sec the road "graded and smooth." This type of treatment would be "of minimal cost," lie said. "The road doesn't need a blacktop -- just fill in the pot-holes with gravel," he suggests.
