The current provincial funding system for long term care does not adequately adequately recognize the demanding costs and resources required to meet the challenges associated with the provision of care for this population. Minister of Transportation Tony Clement said building the highway would be good for the economy. "It will create jobs, enhance economic economic development and provide infrastructure to support new investment. The competitive advantage advantage of Ontario industries will be improved," he said. Industry leaders have said the completed 407 with east and west extensions extensions would provide a congestion- free corridor linking the GTA with Hamilton, the Niagara Pcnninsula, and US markets. markets. Sampson says the next step for government is to find an advisor to assist with a sale process which will "yield the best return, minimize the province's risk, and complete the highway in a timely way." Clarington's councillors councillors count themselves among the Auto Pact's biggest fans. And they showed their support Monday by backing backing a strongly-worded resolution resolution that calls for the federal government to back away from any plans it might have to alter the Pact. "I don't think we can endorse this too strongly," said Councillor Troy Young. "The Region of Durham would be crippled should something happen to General Motors," he observed at the council meeting. He chastised the federal government for considering an end to the Pact by eliminating tariffs on all vehicles and components components coming from oversees. oversees. "It's almost as if they're changing the rules halfway halfway through the game," Lishman Proposal From page 1 identify opportunities for restoration or creation of wildlife habitat and assess the cumulative impact of development, particularly the impact on groundwater. groundwater. Melling also spoke of Unanswered questions his clients have posed. Some ofithese include the appropriateness appropriateness of a "wet industrial industrial use on an unserviccd property in the headwaters of the Wilmot Creek" and the need for further lands to be designated "rural employment area" in the Official Plan. He said a environmental environmental impact statement would be created by a qualified consultant chosen chosen by the municipality but paid by the applicant. In addition, Melling asked that existing studies on hydrogeology and agricultural agricultural impacts submitted by Paula Lishman International be subject to "peer review" by independent independent consultants. Both presentations regarding the need for an environmental study were referred to the planning department's ongoing review of the proposal.
