Page 6 The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, January 6, 1999 Jackman Selected For Canadian University Team Familiar with hockey on a national level after competing in two Memorial Cups while a junior junior hockey player with the Guelph Storm, Jason Jackman will be taking taking the next step to the international international stage later this month. The Bowmanvillc resident has been selected to the team that will represent Canada at the World University Games in Slovakia., Over 2,600 athletes representing 40 countries will be competing in 11 different sports throughout the games. Admittedly exited about wearing wearing a national uniform for the first time, Jackman expects Canada to do well at the games. His prediction is based on an exhibition exhibition game in which Canada lost 4-3 to the Slovakia junior junior national team that participated in the World Junior Championships. "We should have won that game. We had a lot more scoring chances than they did," said Jackman, who was home visiting family during the Christmas holidays. The Canadian team is comprised of players from the Ontario University Athletic Association. The World University Games arc held every three years, and the Canadian team makeup is rotated between the west, Ontario, and Atlantic provinces. In Jackman's case, he was fortunate that after finishing a stellar four-year career with the DHL's Guelph Storm, it was Ontario's turn to supply the talent for the World University Games. Also working in his favour is that the coach of the Canadian team, Marlin Muylaerl, is also the coach at the University of Guelph, where Jackman is currently taking a General BA in sociology, and playing for the varsity hockey hockey team. At the midway point of the Ontario university season, coaches submitted a "ghost" roster of the players who should be invited to a tryout camp. A total of 26 players attended an evaluation camp in Guelph from December 19-22. From there, 22 players were chosen for the Canadian team. After completing his junior career in the spring with an overtime loss to Portland in the finals of the Memorial Cup, Jackman took advantage of the education package offered by the Guelph Storm, and elected to further both his hockey skills and education at the University of Guelph. Expected to be a national contender before the season began, Guelph have stumbled to a 4-6-2 record. "We should be blowing our division away," said the 121-year-old about the talent level of his current hockey Iclub. "Our losses have only been by one goal. Wc don't iseem to get up for the weaker teams when wc play them." The Bowmanvillc resident's versatility is being used in Guelph. He's playing on the team's first line, killing penalties, and playing the power play. So far, the transition has been a smooth one, despite the.differences in junior hockey to the university level. "It's great hockey. Junior is a positional game and you have a lot more room to move. In university, you only have the puck for a few seconds and somebody is on you.". As for his former club, the Guelph Storm, Jackman has managed to make it down to the rink for a couple of games this season. And as he makes his way through the building, building, it's just like old times.
