1 The Claringlon/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, January 9, 1999 Page 9 Bowmanville Rotary Club Celebrates 75th Anniversary by George Vice Club Historian Paul Harris, a lonely lawyer in search of friendship and fellowship organized the first Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905. The name Rotary is attributed to the policy of rotating the meetings to the different members places of business. Today there arc 1,201,585 Rotarians in 29,159 clubs in 158 countries around the world. Rotary quickly spread from coast to coast in the U.S.A. and became international international when a club was organized in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1910. In 1920, The Rotary Club of Toronto sponsored a Rotary Club in Osliawa. In 1923, The Rotary Club of Oshawa sponsored sponsored The Rotary Club of Bowmanvillc. The last two months of 1923 were very busy ones for Tom Holgatc and his committee committee as they organized The Rotary Club of Bowmanvillc assisted by District Governor Andy Wallace of St. Catharines, Rotarian J.L. Whattam, the President of The Rotary Club of Oshawa and his Club members. A list of 17 Charter Members was submitted to Rotary International for approval. The Charter Members were R.F. Aitchison, Banker; W.P. Corbett, Baker; G.E. Chase, Engineer; C. Dickson, Hotel; J.C. Dcvilt, Dentist; G.A. Edmondson, Butcher; T.S. Holgatc, Coal Dealer; B.J. Hazlcwood, Physician; W.C. Ives, Boots and Shoes; George W. James, Publisher; T. H. Knight, Grocer; F.F. Morris, Furniture; D.R. Morrison, Chemist; G.R. Mason, Dry Goods; A.L. Nicholls, Fancy Goods; C.T. Ross, Moving Pictures; and Fred Vanstonc, Miller. The first meeting of the Club was held on Friday, January 11, 1924 at The Bowman House with Tom Holgatc as our Charter President. The meeting was in charge of the Oshawa Club. Present - all members of the Bowmanvillc Club - Governor Andy Wallace of St. Catharines - President Frank Littlefield of Toronto International director John Gibson, Toronto and about 80 members from Oshawa, Toronto, Belleville, Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Port Hope. As was usual, the members of the Toronto club came to Bowmanvillc in their private railway car via the C.P.R. The Motto of Rotary is "Service Above Self'. All Rotary Clubs have taken a very active interest in Community Service. On January 25, 1924, the members members of our Club contributed money to help a child with a handicap in Kendal. Our Club does not keep a permanent record of the names of the children we have helped over the past 75 years. However, it would be interesting to know the name of the child we helped in 1924 and if the child as an adult is still living in our area. Our Club joined what is now The Easter Seal Society in 1931. During the I920's and 30's our Club conducted regular regular clinics for local children. Assistance was provided lor dental work, the removal of tonsils etc. Our local doctors provided their services free. Our Club paid only the hospital costs which allowed us to do much more work with our limited funds., In 1947, our Club conducted the first Easter Seal Campaign. From 1947 to October 8, 1998 our Club has raised $429,148.00, thanks to the generosity of our local citizens. In 1998, our Club supported supported 59 children. Unfortunately the money raised in the Easter Seal Campaign will no longer cover the costs of the needs of these children as more children needing needing help arc added to our case load each year. This means that the clubs supporting the Easter Seals must now look for other ways of raising the money needed. Each year from 6 to 10 children in this area go to the Easter Seals summer camps. Probably the most visible of our Community Service projects arc the two parks we have given to the town. In 1931, we presented the deed to what is now the beautiful and well used Rotary Park on Queen Street. The deed included some acreage in the creek valley south of No. 2 Highway. In 1964, our Club purchased the 17 acre Soper Creek Park. From 1964 to 1974, our members spent many hours clearing the land and working in the mill. In 1974, as our 50th Birthday Gift our Club presented the deed for the property to the Town. The mill building which is on the property is now considered a Heritage Site and is the home of the Visual Arts Centre. In 1957, the Club agreed to renovate the first floor of the old post office building building as a permanent home for our local library. Once again our members spent many hours cleaning and repairing the building to make it ready for the library. As a result of Rotary's efforts, the town passed a By-law making it a free Public Library. This allowed the Library Board to receive provincial grants to help supplement supplement the grants received from the town, As a result, we now have an excellent excellent library service in Bowmanvillc. Our Club has always been interested in the activities of our local hospital. In 1927, President F.F. Morris presented a cheque for $2700.00 to the hospital. Through the years, our Club has provided money to renovate two wards, for the building fund, to buy an isolcttc and two defibrillators etc. In 1983 - 84, our Club agreed to provide the money for a chapel at the hospital. The chapel was dedicated on November 20, 1991. The Rotary Club of Bowmanvillc has established a scholarship fund to provide money to help students finance their university university education. None of the money donated to the fund is ever spent. These funds arc invested and only the income earned is used to award the scholarships. In 1997 we were able to award 4 scholarships scholarships and in 1998, 5 scholarships of $1,000.00 each. It is the hope of our club that donations will increase the amount in the fund so that the income earned each year will allow our club to grant many more scholarships scholarships each year. In 1985, Rotary International introduced introduced a program to have "A Polio Free World by 2005" and to raise $120 million U. S. when Rotary will celebrate its lOOlh birthday in partnership with WHO, the World Health Organizations, UNICEF, the United Nations International Childrens Fund and in partnership with all world governments, As of 1998, Rotary has committed over $400 million U.S. to the project. Our Club has given $24,716.03 U.S. to the project. Over I billion billion children have received the vaccine. In one day in India in 1998, over 127 million children received the vaccine. At the present time, the project is on target to have all children in the world receive the vaccine by the year 2000 and the world certified polio free by the year 2005. More money is still needed to complete complete the project. When the programs first started, the Government of Canada was the first government in the world to give financial help to the project. All Rotarians in the world arc working to bring this project to successful conclusion. The Rotary Club of Oshawa was in charge of our meeting on March 6, 1924 when our Charter was presented to us. Many of the same people who attended our meeting of January 6, 1924 were present present for the presentation of our charter. On March 26, 1999 we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of our Charter Night at the new senior's centre. Our Rotary Club has tried many ways to raise the money needed for our projects. projects. In the 1920's and 1930's Street Fairs were used by all the Rotary Clubs in this area as a way to raise the money needed for their projects. The plays our Club put on in the Town Hall from 1952 -1966 were a main source of the funds we needed for our other projects. projects. In the 1950's and 1960's, our Annual Car Wash was another source of funds for our work. During these years, we started our Christmas Tree sale. In the I990's in partnership with the Kinsmen Club of Bowmanvillc we sponsored sponsored the Ontario Rodeo Finals at the Orono Fair Park for several years. This was not the financial success that the two Clubs expected. Through the years, we have held beef and chicken barbecues. Now it is a chicken chicken barbecue at the Watson Farm each September. Our most successful event is now our Dinner and Auction sale each year. History was made in 1991 when Mrs. Valeric Gardner joined our Club as our first lady member. She was also the first lady President of our Club in 1997 - 98. Our Club now has five lady members. They are Ms. Pauline Mote 1992, Mrs. Nancy Scott 1993, Mrs. Patricia Dyck and Mrs. Carol Browne 1994. All of them are taking a very active part in the work of Rotary in Bowmanville. Walter DcGccr joined our Club on March 23, 1945, was President in 1949- 50. Our members were very proud when Walter was selected as our District Governor for the Rotary Year 1956-57. Walter was fully supported in his work by our Club. To be named a Paul Harris Fellow is considered to be Rotary's Highest Honour. The Honour is named after our Founder Paul Harris. Our Rotary Club has named 14 Paul Harris Fellows, 12 to non Rotarians for their charitable work and to Rotarians for their work on behalf of Rotary. The first two were awarded by our 50th President, Harry Cooke, to Walter DeGeer and Ross Strike at our 50th Birthday Celebrations in 1974. In 1993, a Committee of our Club was formed to name a non Rotarian as Citizen Volunteer of the Year. The selected person to be named a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1993, the committee selected Mr. Harold Ransberry of Kendal, in 1944, Mrs. Mary Tillcock, in 1995 Mr. Ross Metcalf of Hampton and in 1996 Mrs. Willcna Kemp. The awards were presented each year at our weekly meeting. In 1988, Mrs. Beatrice Campbell was named a Paul Harris Fellow for her Community Service work. The awards to these people were well deserved for their volunteer work in our community. Over the past 75 years, our Rotary club has given financial help to many organizations organizations to help them develop their programs programs or assist them with the maintenance maintenance etc. of their buildings and equipment. equipment. We have helped the following: The new Senior's Centre $50,000.00, The arena on Queen St. $ 1,000.00. The Garnet Rickard Recreational Centre $35,000.00, The Memorial Park Pool $21,500.00, The Hospital Chapel $16,000.00, Rotary Park $15,000.00, Durham University $10,000.00,1-landi Transit $9,000.00, The Belvedere at the Museum $5,000.00, Newcastle Library $5,000.00, Bethcsda House, Big Brothers, Child Care, Clarington Youth Centre, Disabled Persons, Durham East Food Bank, Durham Hospice, Ice Storm, Safety Village and Salvation Army. Rotary is a world-wide organization. As such it offers Rotary Clubs an opportunity opportunity to do many charitable works on a global basis such as our Polio project. The Rotary Club of Bowmanville is twinned with the Rotary Club of Elland in Yorkshire, England. The two Clubs exchange information about their history, programs etc. Some of the members of our Club have visited Elland and played golf. We have had a Group Study Exchange from Elland visit our area. The Elland Club extended an invitation to our members to visit Elland in 1999 and stay in the homes of their members. One of our most interesting programs was our International Student Weekends from 1955 to 1964. Each year in November our Club invited 20 to 35 students students from the University of Toronto to come to Bowmanville and stay with a Rotary Family from Friday night to Sunday night. These students came from almost every country in the world. Some of our members still have a contact with their student. From 1969 to 1973 our Club had a Student Exchange Program with Franklin, Pennsylvania. Our members drove our 6 students to Buffalo on Wednesday where they met the 6 students from Franklin. The students returned to their homes on Sunday. Rotary families were the hosts in each country. From 1974 to 1994 there was an International Student Exchange Program. Students would go to another country where they would live with Rotary families families for a year while they attended local schools. Nineteen students went from Bowmanville, only three were children of Rotarians. Sixteen students came to our area. These various student programs were a very worthwhile living experience and gave the students an insight into how people people live and survive in other countries. In 1987 our Club started a Water and Sewage project for the village of Jeedipally with the Rotary Club of Hyderabad, India. The project would supply supply water and sewage facilities to the village. village. Each Rotary Club would donate $4,000.00, CIDA, Canadian International Development Agency $8,000.00 and Rotary International $36,000.00 for a total of $52,000.00. The project was completed. The people people in the Village of Jeedipally now enjoy clean water and have a sewage system. Over the past 75 years, our Rotary Club has been very fortunate. In all our endeavours to raise the money needed, the citizens of this area have always been most generous. The members of the Rotary Club of Bowmanville have always appreciated the support we have received. We extend our sincere thanks for your support. We trust you will find it in your heart to continue your support in the future.
