The Toronto Sun story last week reported that the injury was the result of a tobogganing accident, while the Toronto Star implied that the broken leg that required surgery came from a snowmobiling accident. The latter was denied by Quantrill's wife, Alyson, who was quoted in the Toronto Star story. On Thursday, this press release was issued by the Ontario Provincial Police Northumberland Detachment: Some media reports have implied that this detachment detachment was investigating a snowmobile accident that resulted in the injuries sustained by Mr. Paul Quantrill. This release is to clarify that Paul Quantrill was not involved in any such collision investigated by this detachment on 05 January, 1999. The Northumberland Detachment at no time made any suggestion that Mr. Quantrill had been involved in this accident. Any inference that Mr. QuantrilTs injuries are related is pure speculation and is incorrect. A snowmobile accident did occur later that same day and in the same general area where Mr Quantrill lives, but the two occurrences are in no way related. Just when we thought the tobogganing explanation was actually true, another press release arrived the next day to change our minds. It read as follows: Further to media release of 07 Januaty 1999 The Ontario Provincial Police investigate all Motorized Snow Vehicle accidents involving personal injuty. The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police did not at any time investigate a report of any accident involving Me Paul Quantrill. We were not aware of, therefore we did not investigate investigate a motorized snow vehicle accident. A.v a result of information received however, we will investigate the possibility of a Motorized Snow Vehicle collision. That same day, Quantrill held a press conference in Toronto to admit that his broken leg was the result of a snowmobiling accident. Yesterday, the OPP issued this statement: On Tuesday January 5, at approximately 3:00 p.m., a motorized snow vehicle collision occurred on a groomed public trail in the Ganaraska Forest. A 1997 Polaris XLT snowmobile operated by Mr. Quantrill was westbound on the trail when it left the trail as it entered a curve and struck a tree. Mr. Quantrill .was jlirp.wn from the snowmobile and struck the/trCe, breaking Ins right leg. Other snowmobdiers came upon Mr. Quantrill and provided assistance. On Saturday January 9, Mr. Quantrill reported the accident to Northumberland OPP. As a result of an investigation, it was concluded that speed or alcohol was not a factor in the collision. He was issued a Provincial Offences Notice for "Fail to Report." The out of court settlement is $90. QUITTING TIME -- I've taken some kidding about last week's column on Jason Jackman ending in mid-sentence. The final quote from Jason about attending attending Guelph Storm games should have read: "Some of the fans still recognize me, especially the season ticket holders. I guess they never forget you." These things sometimes happen when the clock strikes 5:00 p.m. and I rush to head out the door. Next time I will stay the extra minute of overtime to complete complete a sentence. When you treated my armpit, my back felt much better. How is this possible? The latissimus dorsi, lats for short, is both a back and shoulder muscle. muscle. This muscle is a common underlying mechanical cause of low back pain. A trigger or tender point is a taut palpable band or knot in a muscle. The trigger point for the lat muscle is in the side of the trunk about 2 hand spans south of the arm- pit. When this muscle is knotted the pain is felt in the low back. What happens happens is the knot in the lats side tilts the trunk towards the tight side. For example if you have a knot in your right lat muscle your trunk will side bend to the right. This will make your right shoulder appear lower than your left, On testing, side bending to the left or opposite side, is restricted, Either side bend will bring on your low back pain, Patients olten report that lifting and working with their arms overhead or in front of thorn Is the most painful for their back, This Is because the lat starts in the low back, runs up the lower part of the shoulder blade, comes around the armpit and ends at the upper arm. Because the knot or trigger point is in the armpit, on the side of the trunk, it is often missed. Mechanically speaking, speaking, the lats rule over the small back muscles. The back muscles can not release until the lat is treated. As the body compensates, related triggers also form in the shoulder, chest, outer elbovy and hand. Treatment must target target both the site of your back pain plus the mechanical reason for your pain. Inactivating the lat trigger point and the related triggers is the key. We use the Electro Acuscope Pain and Stress Management Systems. Once the knot in the lat Is released, specific exercises must be done to prevent the problem from coming back.
