The Clarington/Courticc Independent. Bowmanvillc, Saturday. January 16, 1999 Page 8 MR Supports Women's Hockey Team Canada vs. Team Finland January 20th "She shoots she scores!" This isn't the cry Foster Hewitt made so famous during during his hockey broadcasts on CBC radio's Hockey Night in Canada in the 1940's. But, "she shoots she scores", is a reality of how Canada's most popular sport is no longer the preserve preserve of the male gender. I'm happy to be one of a group of people bringing Canada's National Women's Hockey team to Durham to play a game against Team Finland on January 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. I've had the opportunity to meet some of the members members of our Olympic Silver Medal team. They were so enthusiastic about playing hockey, not for money, but for their country. They play for the sheer thrill of seeing Canada compete compete on the world hockey stage. It would do us all a lot of good if some of their energy and enthusiasm could rub off on the rest of us. The government just released a report entitled, Sport in Canada: Leadership, Partnership and Accountability Everybody's Business. It makes some sweeping recommendations recommendations about tax policy and amateur and professional professional sport. Most Canadians see these studies as somewhat ludicrous. Especially when we see million-dollar athletes athletes crying about being underpaid. Admittedly, there are huge differences about how we here in Canada treat sport as opposed to Americans. Does that mean we have to copy them? For example, one recommendation recommendation in Sport In Canada calls for equalizing foreign exchange rates to encourage athletes to come or stay here. But few of us FREE Quick OVER-THE-PHONE Home Evaluation Lucien Lambier - Associate Broker Qnju^, CALL NOW! as est ua 1 -800-243-3309 Parliamentary Report by Alex Shepherd would have the luxury of being paid in U.S. dollars. More importantly, when people get into the argument of foreign exchange they forget dollars are not on parity parity for a number of reasons. For instance, our cost of living living is lower than the Americans. The report also argues that Canada's .tax structure makes it difficult to attract or keep high performance athletes. All this tells me is that we have to get our tax structure in order so it is less onerous on everyone, not just athletes. Why should they be exempt from a tax law that the rest of us aren't? Canadians can do a great deal to support their sport without selling the farm. For example, you can come out and support our national women's hockey team January 20. As I said, these women display incredible enthusiasm enthusiasm for hockey and I'm sure they will put heart and soul into the game against Team Finland. Canada won silver against the Fins, who took the bronze at last year's Winter Olympics. So the quality of play is world class. I'm honoured my colleague colleague Sheila Copps, who is also Minister of Heritage and minister responsible for sport, will be at the game to drop the puck. Everyone in the crowd will get a hand-held Canadian flag to wave in support of Team Canada. The game is pretty close to being sold out. So, if you want to be part of this premier premier hockey event, contact the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. I'm looking forward to seeing you all there game night. (905) 786-2911 WILMA ENTWISLE Pricing to Sell vs. Pricing to Sit There arc many factors that affect the sale of a home. The single most important element in getting your home sold, however, is pricing it properly. Your home should be priced according to its location, its condition, condition, the current Real Estate market trends, and most important of all, the SELLING prices (not necessarily the LISTING prices) of similar homes in your area. Here arc a few things to think about when selling a home: 1) The exact asking price of your home depends on how quickly you need or want to sell it. The more realistic the price, the faster the sale. 2) The more houses for sale (unsold) in your area, the more competitively you need to price yours, 3) Building an excessive amount of negotiating room into your asking price, is not a good idea. Your listing agent may be aware that you'll take less, but hundreds of other agents and buyers won't. 4) An "over-improved" home can take a long time to sell unless it is priced correctly FOR THE NEIGHBOURHOOD. 5) To encourage Real Estate professionals to lake you seriously and to show your home to their clients, price it accurately, 6) A poor housing market will not prevent your home from selling if it's priced according to the current market conditions (the key word being CURRENT.) 7) Last but not least, remember that more advertising, advertising, more Open Houses and changing Realtors are NOT solutions to gelling your home sold. PRICING TO SELL AND NOT TO SIT, IS THE ANSWER. YOUR QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS ARE IMPORTANT TO ME.
