"It was not an easy job, as grants never are," Mayor Diane Hamrc said alter the meeting. "We always have more applications than we have money in the pot. I'm very proud of what council did, I think you (councillors) did an excellent job and I think the community is going to be pleased." Councillors worked down the list going over each application one at a time. A motion made at the beginning of the meeting to only consider the applications of those organizations with offices in Claringlon was defeated. As councillor Jane Rowe said, council decided it would be unfair to discount groups based on their mailing address. "Unfortunately, we have some groups that have their main address in another municipality municipality but that serve our community," she said. "To just say we aren't going to consider them is a mistake because even though their administration administration office is elsewhere, they arc providing providing a service within our municipality." A number of organizations making applications applications were denied money. They were: the Bowmanville Eagles Junior Hockey Association, Alzhcimcrs Society of Durham, Autism Society Ontario, Canadian Cystic Fibrosis, Canadian Diabetes Association, Catholic Family Services of Durham, Durham Region Community Care Association, Kawartha Child Care Services, Rehabilitation Foundation for the Disabled Operating as Ontario March of Dimes, Saint Elizabeth Health Care, The Community Foundation of Durham and the Ontario Lung Association. Samples from the scene have been sent to a lab in Toronto to determine if any "accelerants" were involved, but Ilesson said there is no way to know how long it will take to get those results back. The gas bar at the front of the building was not affected by the fire, but Rogers said it was a concern. "Any time there is gas in the area, there is a danger," he said "They (firefighters) had it contained to the one room. It did get into the roof, but it didn't go any further than that." Rust proofing chemicals were also being stored in the building, but Chief Hesson said they were nowhere near the flames. "Most of the stuff used for rust proofing these days is non-flammable," non-flammable," he said. "But, the flames didn't get near any of that anyway." For the owner, Brian Bastianelli, the fire comes at a time when he was celebrating his 25th year in business. But this setback has not deterred him. His wife, Darlene, said rebuilding is definitely in the plans. "There is no doubt about it," she said. "It could have been a lot worse. Other than the electrical room and the roof, the rest of the building just suffered suffered smoke damage." FIGHTING THE FLAMES -- Claringlon firefighters brought in the aerial ladder truck to fight the flames shooting shooting from the roof of Krown Rust Control in the early hours of Monday morning. It took firefighters four hours to put out the blaze. Passers-by Helped Alert Neighbours Three area teens went door-to-door knocking knocking on doors to alert neighbours about the fire at Krown Rust Control on King St. E Monday morning. Tim Denniston and his friends, Lisa Fcldcomp and Jamie Burley, were at the 7-11 Monday night when the fire broke out. Claringlon Divisional Fire Chief Bill Hesson said that they smelled the smoke and "curiosi- _ ty got the best of them." "Mr. Denniston had a phone on him and called 911," Chief Hesson said. "Then they proceeded to go to thé apartment complex to the south of the building (Krown Rust Control) and started to knock on doors." They were joined by an off-duty Toronto Police officerwho happened to be in the area, "Between the four of them, they got the families out," he said. There was no damage done to any of the adjacent buildings, but Chief Hesson said the fire department always appreciates any help they get from the public. Tritium Emissions are being Monitored At Durham Nuclear Generating Stations Results of a 1997 Phytotoxicology investigation by the Ministry of the Environment has been released and both the Darlington and Pickering Nuclear Generating Stations rated well. The study found that tritium emitted from the stations was detected in grass and tree foliage and that the levels were consistent with or lower than previous survey results. In summary, it suggested suggested that, if further surveys were needed, the sampling fruits and vegetables may be a better indicator indicator of long-term impact. > resented on the GTSB. "I firmly believe, if it wasn't wasn't for Alan Tonks, we rural people wouldn't have a voice on the board," she said. Hamre is Clarington's lone representative. The GTSB had been widely panned by Durham Region's politicians over the past few months. Even after the first iliccting, Durham Regional Chair Roger Anderson said lie's concerned concerned about the board being run by Toronto. Because of its size, Toronto was granted 50 percent of the vote on the board. Durham's share amounts to 10 percent. percent. Peel, York and I lalton get the remainder of the vote. "The Region will have to follow it very, very closely closely and make sure the decisions made by the City of Toronto aren't to the detriment to the Region of Durham," he said. The GTSB's next meeting will he held February 26. ' 1 ' v k ' WHOPPER or Chicken ...'when you purchase a WHOPPER® or Chicken sandwich and <\ medium fries at the regular price.
