Bowmanville, Wednesday, January 27, 1999 Letter to the Editor Excellent Work on Women's Hockey Game in Oshawa Dear Editor, I am writing to you in connection with the Canada vs Finland game at the Civic Auditorium on January 20, 1999. Clarington Girls Hockey, Oshawa Girls Hockey, Durham West Girls/Women, Whitby and Oshawa Ladies Association united, although rivals on the ice, worked together like a team that had been for a long time. Excellent work ladies!! Also I would like to comment comment on what a true PROFESSIONAL PROFESSIONAL Sommer West was. Although not dressed for the game in her hometown, hometown, she attended the pregame reception and the game. As she was the hometown hometown girl and many were disappointed that she was not on the ice to show her skills. She proved to be a true professional.and did not disappoint her fans, by being very visible to everyone. everyone. We are extremely proud to say that "Yes, Sommer West, comes from Clarington and some one our hockey players can look up to." As one group of fans had banners waving at the games that said "CANADA IS #2, WITHOUT SOMMER SOMMER WEST" and "YOU TOOK THE BEST FROM THE EAST, THE BEST FROM THE NORTH, THE BEST FROM THE SOUTH. WHERE IS THE BEST, WEST." Sincerly, Beverly Ferguson Canada Baffles Finland in International Hockey Team Canada's Jayna Hcfford (#16) breaks in on Finnish goalie Minna-Riike Hurskaincn during an International Women's hockey game that was played at the Civic Auditorium in Oshawa on Wednesday, January 20. Canada held narrow narrow first and second period leads, but had to settle for a 6-6 tie. The battle was the first of a four-games series for the teams, who are preparing for the World Championships in March that will be hosted by Finland. Bowmanville Eagles Still in Playoff Hunt The Bowmanville Eagles picked up an important point on Sunday night, despite a 4- 3 overtime setback to Trenton in a Provincial Junior Hockey League game at the Recreation Complex. The point keeps Bowmanville's slim playoff playoff chances alive. Overtime Goal Gives Oshawa Generals a 6-5 Win Over Barrie Colts Brad Ralph's goal less then a minute into overtime lifted the Oshawa Generals to a 6-5 victory over the visiting visiting Barrie Colts in an OHL league game played at the Civic Auditorium on Sunday night, - Oshawa carried a 5-3 lead into the third period on goals by John Kozoriz, Derrell Upton, Ilya Demidov, Jim Baxter, and Brian Passmore, but a pair of goals in the third period by Barrie forced the overtime. '. The win improved Oshawa's record to 24-18-3, after suffering a 3-0 setback in Ottawa on Friday night. ! Oshawa will be busy this weekend, playing three games in three nights. On Friday they travel to Kingston, while on Saturday evening they are in Eric. On Sunday, January 31, they host Belleville in a special matinee game beginning at 2:00 p.m. BROKEN WINDSHIELD? Sean Haynes, Shane Norton and Ryan Jackman had goals for Bowmanville, who were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period, and trailed 3- 2 after the second. The loss drops Bowmanville's record on the year to 15-23-4. This Friday night, Bowmanville will travel to Bancroft, while on Sunday, they will host Ajax at the Recreation Complex beginning at 6:45 p.m. With only nine games remaining in the regular season, each outing outing is a "must win" for the Eagles. At last Wednesday's league all-star game held in Streetsville, Ryan Jackman represented Bowmanville. His East team were defeated by the West representatives 6-2. Jackman replaced Jay Cannings, who was originally originally selected to represent Bowmanville at the game. Though Cannings has had a good season, collecting 20 points in 18 games, his selection to the all-star team was unusual considering considering he has only played half the season. Jackman, who leads the team in scoring with 58 points in 40 games, was the logical choice.
