The Firehouse officially opened its doors to the public public in February 1998 with a considerable considerable amount of work still to be done. He was donating blood for the second second time. months and attempts at building a viable youth program program structure, the government of Canada will provide provide funds that will allow the Firehouse to hire twelve young people from the Clarington community for a period of 26 weeks. These project participants will assist in the development development of the Firehouse as a well programmed youth centre for Clarington. Furthermore, par ticipants will acquire valuable work experiences and transferable skills that will enhance their opportunities for future employment. This initiative has been made possible possible through Human Resources Development Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. Those who meet the project project criteria will be paid by way of a weekly stipend and a bonus for successful successful project completion. The recruitment process is currently underway. If you've pondered, "What happens when we die?" or "How do we deal with Guilt?" then maybe you should investigate the Alpha course at St. John's Anglican Church in Bowmanville. The Alpha course was originally originally created at Holy Trinity Church in England, It has been described as a basic introductory course on the Christian faith. It is taught via video by the Reverend Nicky Gumbel. In less than a decade, Alpha has captivated thousands. thousands. Reverend Alister McGrath from Regent College, Vancouver says, "The Alpha course has now become one of the most important means of bringing new people to church and energizing energizing the faith of those who arc already Christians." John Wimber, an American from the Vineyard churches, says: "I am not surprised to hear of Alpha's immediate acceptance acceptance and use by hundreds of churches all over the world". Currently Alpha has offices in 14 nations including a Canadian one in Vancouver. St. John's Anglican church has held four Alpha courses in the past two years, with over 60 people taking taking part. While the majority of people attending have come from their congregation, a substantial number have come from other denominations. denominations. The format is quite simple. The group gathers at 6:15 p.m. and supper supper is served at 6:30. Then there's a 45 minute video led by Nicky Gumbel. lie's a marvellous story teller; lie's quite humorous, but most of all what lie says makes so much sense. In the first video, Nicky puts to rest any questions questions about the validity of the Bible, In subsequent subsequent weeks he covers topics like "Who is Jesus?" "Why did Jesus Die?" "How can I be sure of my Faith?" and "How does God guide us?" After the videos, the group gathers for about 45 minutes to discuss discuss what they have seen or any other topics which come to mind. It's a ■ stimulating time, The Alpha course is ten weeks in length, the next session starts Wednesday, February 17th and finishes the end of April.
