The trio were among the first on the scene, placing a 911 call to police and going door-to-door to alert neighbours, Three area teens went knocking on doors to alert neighbours neighbours about the fire at Krown Rust Control on King St. E., in Bowmanville Monday morning. Tim Denniston and his friends, Lisa Feldcomp and Jamie Burley, were at the 7-Eleven Variety Store Monday night when the fire broke out. Clarington Divisional Fire Chief Bill Hcsson said that they smelled the smoke and "curiosity got the best of them." "Mr. Denniston had a phone on him and called 911," Chief Hesson said. "Then they proceed ed to go to the apartment apartment complex to the south of the building (Krown Rust Control) and started to knock on doors." They were joined by an off-duty Toronto police officer officer who happened to be in the area. "Between the four of them, they got the families out," he said. There was no damage done to any of the adjacent buildings, buildings, but Chief Hesson said the fire department always appreciates any help they get from the public. Fire Investigation Continues The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has not yet determined the cause of the lire at Krown Rust Control on King St. E„ in Bowmanville, early Monday morning. Samples from the site have been sent to a lab in Toronto for analysis, but it is not know how long it will take before the reports come back. Durham Regional Police are still investigating. There were signs of an unlawful entry and police arc currently following following up some leads. The fire, which started at about 12:30 Monday morning, did $40,000 ' in damage to the building and its contents. contents. Conservation Authority is Under Fire Three of the Kawartha Region Conservation Authority's 21 member municipalities want out and have started the process to have the Authority disbanded. disbanded. Clarington's representative on the board, Councillor Troy Young, says the motion is hard to understand because the KRCA lias been fiscally responsible. He says that Manvers and Omemee townships townships and the Village of Bobcaygeon are asking for the authority to be dissolved because of the proposed three percent increase in the 1999 levy. Only a small portion of northern Clarington is part of the Kawartha Region authority. One Clarington councillor councillor serves on the authority's board. "The increase is not large by any means. If we are being affected with cutbacks, cutbacks, then they are too." he added. "I hope at this point we will continue to support their continued existence. Kawartha Conservation is doing an excellent job and I feel this is something we can't allow to happen and 1 hope council will support me."
