Holly Broome and her teammates teammates finished fourth overall after six games. They lost the bronze medal game to another team that was representing North America. During the course of the tournament, tournament, the 18-year-old OAC student student at Courtice Secondary School posted a .357 batting average, and was stellar defensively at third base with a fielding percentage of 1.000. Statesman Toros Reach Semis The weekend of January 29-31, saw the Canadian Statesman Major Novice Toros travel to Cambridge for the 40lli annual Preston International Tournament. The Toros started against the Mississauga North Stars who opened the scoring late in the first period and added another in the second period to carry a 2-0 lead into the third. The Stars popped a quick goal in the last frame that seemed to awaken the Toros. Daniel McCarthy finished finished off a nice pass from Luke Pithcr to get the boys on the scoreboard. The Toros swarmed the net for the balance balance of the game but were unable to beat the sharp Northstar goalie, ending up with a 3-1 loss. An early Saturday game saw the Toros offense come to life as Pithcr put his team up by two early in the game, with assists to Brandon Ernst and Zak Snowden. Mitch Callicu scored the Toros third goal on a fine passing play with Brandon Castellan and Denver Brown. The third period saw Pithcr and Snowden combine to set up Ernst for a goal and then Castellan finished off the scoring with a fine individual play to give the Toros a 5-0 win. The Toros entered the third game against the squad from London, knowing that a shutout victory, was necessary necessary to gel them into the semi-finals. Breakaway goals from Castellan and Pithcr. with assists to Carl Andrews, McCarthy and Snowden put the Toros ahead by two. In the third, Pithcr went end-to-end for the third goal to hand the Toros a 3-0 win they required. Goalie Scott Junkin was superb in earning his second shutout of the day. The semi-finals saw the Toros meet the strong Mississauga Terriers squad. The Terriers came out flying and surged to a 2-0 lead early in the game. Harmac Transportation Edges Unionville The Harmac Transportation Tyke Selects hosted a pair of games on the weekend of January 30th and 31st and fielded two strong performances. performances. The Harmac Selects opened the scoring on a beautiful beautiful pass from Jake Doyle to Mark Smith who sent a backhand between the pads of the Unionville goalie. Unionville scored midway through the third period to once again tie the game, but Mitchell Bell scored less than a minute later, set up by Sam Jackson and Richard Braybrook to put the Harmac Selects ahead for good. A frantic last minute by Unionville with the sixth attacker was thwarted by the Eagle Selects as they won the game 3-2. The Whitby Tyke Selects came to town on Sunday, January 31st. Whitby managed to score the sole goal of the first period. Midway through the period, passes from Brennan LaChance and Jake Doyle sent Mark Smith in alone on the Whitby goalie and he converted the opportunity into a goal for the Harmac Selects. The period was another entertaining entertaining one for the fans as most of it was played without a whistle, one segment segment of the period going 6:18 without a whistle. "I was very surprised, but very happy. I was going with the intention of just finishing," said the 24-year- old Oshawa resident of Ills success against competition that came from as far away as Colorado, Illinois, and Michigan. In all, close to 150 competitors were vying for a spot on the medal podium. The medal haul closes out a successful season of long track competition for Rowsell, who only began speed skating in the fall. At the provincial championships championships earlier in the season, season, Rowsell won gold medals in each of the four events. He will compete in Kingston, then turn his focus to the Provincial Short Track Championships that arc slated for Gloucester in March. A top finish there will send him to the North American Short Track Championships in late March that will he held in Chicago.
