School Board Briefs New Deal Reached The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board has reached a two-year collective agreement with secondary occasional teachers. The agreement, effective Sept. 1, 1998 to Aug. 31,2000, provides a .5 per cent increase in daily pay rates Feb. 1, 1999 and a further .5 per cent increase Sept. 1, 1999. It also includes provisions on the maximum number of teachers who can be placed on the secondary occasional list, access to extended health coverage, sick leave for long-term assignment teachers and evaluation. Revised Policy on Head Lice A new system-wide policy and guidebook on pediculosis pediculosis (head lice) education, prevention and treatment will be available to schools in June 1999. A committee of parents and principals has been meeting to review the issue and the guidebook will be put together once the board gets feedback from eight pilot sites. Board Approves New Objectives The public school board has approved more than 100 objectives that will set the board's course for the next three years. Its six prime goals include encouraging program delivery delivery that focuses on the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that prepare students to function as effective members of the changing world community. The goals also encourage harmonization, co-operation and partnerships with other organizations and agencies to help foster the positive, positive, caring environments necessary for social and emotional emotional supports in a society with changing values and a restrictive economic climate. "Everything we do will focus on one overriding priority providing the highest quality education programs and services services to students," said Dick Malowney, director of education, education, in a press release. Snowmobile Collision In Scugog A snowmobile collision in Scugog has sent a Downsview man to hospital with serious injuries. At about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Giuseppe Pizzorusso, 34, of Downsview, was operating a 1989 Formula Mach I Ski-Doo snowmobile and travelling southbound on Lake Scugog when his snowmobile lost control, struck an embankment bordering the north edge of Scugog Island and then hit a tree. Pizzorusso was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the collision. The snowmobile was destroyed. Damage is estimated at $4,000. Anyone witli information on the collision is asked to call Durham Regional Police at 579-1520, extension 5256.
