That thought came to mind again a couple of weeks ago while standing in the players' bench of the Recreation Complex and taking photos during a figure skating competition. Along the'east wall of Pad A, arc a number number of banners. The dominant word scrawled across them in big bold letters is OSHAWA. Because of the prominence of Oshawa's name on the banners, if you weren't from the area, you would have a hard time convincing people that they were in Bowmanville and not visiting a rink belonging to our neighbours neighbours to the west. Presenting banners to hockey clubs is a nice gesture on the part of a tournament organizing committee. The banners show a little creativity instead of the traditional trophy. trophy. But, the banners would be better served being presented to the team's sponsor then at an arena. Something Worthy I have nothing against .recognizing the accomplishments of teams who have achieved something of significance. But it has to be something worthy of taking up permanent permanent space in the rafters of an arena, An All-Ontario championship is certainly wor- V thy. A Silver Stick certainly ranks up the scale of importance. And there arc probably others. But, hanging a permanent banner in the rafters for a one-day tournament in which a team happened to win three games just doesn't seem to meet the criteria. The Recreation Complex isn't the only facility guilty of cluttering up the interior of the rink. In my old rink in Newcastle, the rafters there arc also littered with an excessive excessive number of banners that arc hanging over the players' benches. Looking Back I remember back to a time when the Newcastle arena was being built, and all of the minor hockey teams played their games at the old arena on Queen St. in Bowmanville that season. A couple of teams, the bantams and midgets, advanced to the All-Ontario finals, and managed to win. Luckily for them, the arena was completed in time so they could play some playoff games in the new building. During my minor hockey days, they were the only two teams to win an Ontario championship championship out of Newcastle. Yet, each Saturday morning when my son has skating lessons, I scan all of the banners, looking for those two and am unable to locate them. It's a shame that they arc virtually lost in the shuffle among all the others. The same can be said of the Jr. C All- Ontario banners that were won by the Bowmanville Eagles. Those championship teams arc what the Eagles are best remembered for. Yet, there are banners of less significance surrounding surrounding them. Although those recent years were special ones, the Eagles have had many just like them over the course of their 30 years. To recognize only the final years of accomplishments accomplishments at the Jr. C level with banners, and virtually virtually ignore all the others must not sit too well with past players who visit the Recreation Complex. Winning tournament championships are fun for hockey teams. Accepting rewards, and the celebrations that follow are memories memories that last a lifetime. Let's leave it at that. Those kinds of memories arc best kept in the mind, and not hanging from the rafters.
