Letter to the Editor Call Your Senator The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 3, 1999 Page 5 Dear Editor, Last year the Canadian Senate received a 10% increase in their overall budget budget - and they still overspent. Now they arc asking for another 6%! If they get it, it adds up to a 16% budget increase over two years. That's outrageous. Who else gets a 16% budget increase? Not hard- pressed farmers. Not workers. workers. Not seniors. Not the homeless or the unemployed. Not our healthcare or education education budgets. Canadians can stop the increase. The House of Commons will vote on the Senate request in early March. The NDP will be voting voting strongly against it, just as we voted against last year's increase. And, as it will not be a confidence vote, other MPs can vote according to their beliefs. Liberal MPs, for example, will not have to worry about their party line. Contact your MP and tell him or her that Canadians do not support the existing Senate, let alone giving them a 16% budget increase over the next two years. Tell your MP to vote NO to the proposed proposed increase. Better yet, call a Senator and tell them how you feel about this cash grab. Any Senator can be reached toll free at 1-800-267-7362. The reasons to abolish the Senate just keep adding up. Phm, Blood in the stool Is not normal. It might be due to hemorrhoids or could be a sign of colorectal cancer. Early diagnosis Is very important if it's the latter. If you observe this kind of occurrence, see your doctor. It was in 1946 that the first antihistamine became freely available to the public. It was called Benadryl and Is still available today. We often hear the term "borderline diabetic". That's like being a little bit pregnant. You either are or you aren't diabetic. However many Canadians have diabetes and don't know it. Symptoms include tiredness, fatigue, thirst, increased urination and weight loss. These symptoms could be due to high blood sugar. Have it checked. By the way, if you are diabetic, remember that proper fitting shoes are very important. Because circulation to the feet may be impaired in diabetics, pressure on foot areas can result in pressure sores and ulcers. Good shoes and daily foot checks are important. With soccer fields, the waterfront trail and a butterfly meadow on the site, the Darlington Generating Station is more than just a nuclear plant. "People need to realize that they can take advantage of these facilities," Terry Doran, Darlington's business services manager, told Bowmanville Ro tari ans last week. "We're not in a situation where we can give land away, but we want to strike a balance as far as using it." The Durham Youth Soccer Club uses the three soccer fields regularly and there are two more fields in the works. There is also a baseball diamond diamond available. "Part of the ongoing . development of the site is that we are fuming areas, such as an old landfill, into other uses for the enjoyment of the community." Terry Doran Business Service Manager The four units at Darlington arc responsible for producing 20 per cent of the electricity for Ontario, Beyond that function, there are a number of ways for area citizens to enjoy the site. The waterfront trail runs through the property. There is a new butterfly meadow, and a number of ponds on the site remain as bird sanctuaries. "Part of the ongoing development of the site is that we are turning areas, such as an old landfill, into other uses for the enjoyment of the community," said Doran. To do that, Darlington runs a number number of cooperative programs to try and get the community involved. Students at Courtice Secondary School were instrumental in developing the waterfront waterfront trail, while area junior schools have made bird nesting boxes and area Boy Scouts participate in an annual tree planting program. "We are bringing in people to catalogue catalogue the plants and animals that use the facility," said Doran. "We have already found wild orchids that are not common to the Durham area." Deer, foxes and wolves are a common common sight on the land, but Darlington has also turned some of its attention to the waterways in the area. "Outside of the nuclear power plants, where the warm water is discharged, discharged, is a great habitat for fish," explained Doran. "It's not uncommon to see a number of charter boats out there fishing in the morning. We also look at all of the waterways to determine determine what inhabits them." Zebra Muscles have been a problem at the plant. Doran said divers have been working on a regular basis to clear them from the discharge grating which is 50 to 60 feet below the surface. surface. THE SPINAL COLUMN Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are labels that arc being put on our children at an alarmingly increasing rate. And yet in a November 1998 article The National Institute for Health admits that their current stance on the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder is a contradiction. From a scientific point of view, medicine demands that an accurate diagnosis be made before proper treatment can be administered. Despite this there is the admission that children with ADD are being treated even though there is no way to make an accurate diagnosis. Their report, by a panel of experts, called attention deficit disorder a "profound problem" that currently affects 3-5% of school children and costs more than 3 billion dollars. But a consistent, proven method of diagnosing and treating this disorder remains elusive says the chairman of the panel Dr. David Kupfer. The most common treatment, given the absence of an accurate diagnosis, is Ritalin a drug categorized as a class 2 narcotic that shares virtually the same properties as cocaine. Emergency room visits hy children ages 10-14 involving Ritalin intoxication have now reached the same level as those of cocaine which indicates escalating abuse of this highly addictive drug. According to this report, there arc no studies that have been undertaken to examine the adverse affect on children taking Ritalin for more than 14 months. Our concern is the apparent willingness to treat in the absence of an accurate diagnosis with a very powerful drug that has no studies proving its long term safety. There is no question that we are dealing with a neurological problem at the core of this condition. Chiropractic, while not a treatment of ADD, does have a profound affect on the body's nervous system and its ability to bring healing. Doesn't it make far more sense to find out why the nervous system is malfunctioning than to mask the symptoms with powerful drugs? If you or your loved ones suffer from this or a similar disorder, you owe it to yourself to allow chiropractic to remove the interference that may be at the root of the problem.
