On May 30, 1928, our Club had the privilege of playing host to Ontario Rotarians and their ladies at the Boys Training School. This was an opportunity opportunity for all Ontario Rotarians to visit the school and see the work it was doing. In November 1929, the first annual trip for Rural School Children to the Tommy Ross's Picture Palace was held. In 1930, 600 attended. By March 1930, our membership had increased from 17 to 30. Our Charter President Tom Holgatc died on February 12, 1935. Tom had taken a very active part in getting our Club organized and guiding the Club until his death. On March 30, 1936, our first Inter- Club meeting was held with the Lions Club. This has now become an annual event. In April 1938, the Inter-Club ladies night was held in the Newcastle Community Hall with members of Rotary, Lions and their ladies. Tickets were a dollar each. A five star entertainment entertainment program was provided. The artist included Adolph Koldolfsky, an outstanding violinist, accompanied by his wife, Gwen Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Williams of Bowmanville, Lome Davidson, tenor, Frank Sentry, Juggler and the inimitable inimitable Bill Fulton presented a movie "On to San Francisco". On February 2, 1949, with our 25th President Howard Rundlc our 25th anniversary was held at St. Paul's Church with about 100 Rotarians in attendance. Rotarian Joe Caldcr of the Toronto Club was the speaker. For the first time in our history in February 1952, our spouses took over A Polio Free World by 2005 In 1985 Rotary International spearheaded a project to eliminate Polio from the world by the year 2005, Rotary's 100th birthday. Rotary is well suited to lead such a project. Today tWfcre are 1,201,585 Rotarians in 29,159 Rotary Clubs in 158 countries in the world. Rotary the leading non-government contributor in partnership with WHO, The World Health Organization, UNICEF, The United Nations International Children's Fund and the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention undertook undertook to eliminate polio from the world by the year 2005. What a celebration that will be. Rotary proceeded to raise the $120 million U.S. it had committed towards the costs of the project. As of 1999, Rotary has raised and committed over $400 million U.S. for the project. Our Club has given $24,716.03 U.S. In 1999, $100.00 U.S. will buy 370 doses of the vaccine. The Americans and many other countries are now considered to be polio free. The last reported case in Canada was in 1992. To be considered polio free, a country must not have any polio cases for a period of five consecutive years. Rotarians around the world have played a vital role in the project. They have organized the National Immunization Days "NIDS" in their own and many countries where there arc no Rotary Clubs. The Rotarians in co-operation with local governments arrange for a site to hold a "NID". They recruit the volunteers volunteers needed to administer the vaccine, transport the vaccine and some volunteers volunteers to the site, advertise and promote attendance at the site by the parents and their children. On one day in India in 1998, 127 million children received the vaccine. • At the present time, the project is on target. However, the year 1999 is crucial crucial to the success of the project. Every child in the world must have received the vaccine by the year 2000 to have the world certified polio free by the year 2005. More money is still needed to complete the project. When the program was first started, the Government of Canada was the first government in the world to give financial help to the project. All Rotarians in the world are working to bring the project to a successful conclusion. This can only be done, with the full co-operation of everyone. In 1953, we had a booth at the International Ploughing Match in Cobourg. Sandwiches were made at the Bank of Montreal by the Rotary ladies and rushed to Cobourg while they were still fresh. Wc also sold peanuts. In spite of the rain, we made $800.00. In the spring of 1954, we planted our first Christmas Trees, a project which would produce good return in the future. In 1954, we planted 2000 trees by hand. Rotarian Bill Rudell acquired a planter which we used between 1955 and 1959, a total of 40,000 trees were planted. In December 1962, we sold our first trees at a profit of $92.00. Each year we sold trees until the project was finished in 1971. • One of our most interesting programs programs was our International Student Weekends between 1955 and 1964. Our children children also had an opportunity to spend time with these students and learn about life and schooling in their countries. From 1974 to 1994 there was an International Student Exchange Program. Students from our area went to another country where they lived with a Rotary family for one year while they attended school. Nineteen students went from the Bowmanville area, only three students were children of Rotarians. Sixteen students came to our area from another country.
