Bowmanville Figure Skating Club Sends Members to Area Competitions Young Alanna Kurt (right) won a silver medal and a bronze medal at the competitions she represented the Bowmanville Figure Skating Club in this season. She skated skated at the Raccoon Rally in Bowmanville, and another meet in Manvcrs. The above members of the Bowmanville Figure Skating Club competed in a number of competitions over the past season, including Pineridge, Raccoon Rally, and Manvcrs Mini- Blades. Skaters include, front row, (1-r), Megan Ernst, Heather Monaghan, Erica Duncan, Jordan Somogyi, Taylor Milburn, Stacey Van Voorden. Middle row, (1-r), Christine Miller, Eryn Wright, Carly Cartier, Taken Paterson, Olyvia Greentree, Carley Mcllroy, Sarah Neil, Alison Duncan. It has been a busy season for the above members of the Bowmanville Figure Skating Club. Many of them travelled to competitions at Pineridge, EOSIC, Uxbridge, and Napanee. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 17. 1999 Section Two Page : Newcastle Optimists Claim Title At Tournament in Brockville The Ciarington Atom girls' team, sponsored by the Newcastle Optimists, entered into a tournament in Brockville the weekend of Feb. 27th and 28th. These young girls did the C. G. H. A. and all of Ciarington proud. In a four game tournament, our girls not only exhibited great hockey skills, but also excellent team spirit. For the coaching staff, the team, and enthusiastic fans, it will be a weekend to be remembered. Our first game of the tournament tournament saw us up against Kanata. This was an exciting end to end game, with our girls exhibiting strong offensive and defensive skills. Ashlcc Beattie made several several key saves enabling our girls to hang onto a 1-0 win. Scoring for the Optimists was Jalana Blakcr assisted by Jana Crydcrman and Leah Farr. MVP went to Ashlee Beattie. Our second game of the tournament was against the Kingston Kodiacs. With our girls still pumped and ready to play, they walked away with a 5-0 win. Scoring for the Optimists were. Courtney Hamilton, Ashley Gendron, Jana Crydcrman (2) and Rosemary Quinlan,with assists going to Angie Haass, Sorena Michaud, Kandacc Blakcr, Brittany Richards, Ashley Gendron and Courtney Hamilton. MVP went to Jana Crydcrman. Our third game of the tournament tournament saw the girls up and at it early against a strong contender from Akwcsasnc. This was an exciting game to the end with the Optimists hanging onto a 1- 0 win. Scoring for the team was Angie Haass with assists going to Jana Crydcrman and Leah Farr. MVP went to Crystal Fraser. The championship and final game was now at hand. This saw the fans, coaching staff and team exhibit the type of com radeship, pride and team effort one should expect Our girls laced off against the Kingston Comets. With all round exceptional exceptional effort put forth by the whole team, our girls walked away with a 6-0 win for the gold medal. Scoring for Ciarington were Jana Crydcrman (4), Angie Haass and Courtney Hamilton, with assists going to Leah Farr. Kan dace Blakcr, Jalana Blaker, Ashley Gendron, Crystal Fraser, Jana Crydcrman, Brittany Richards and Rosemary Quinlan. MVP went to Kandacc Blaker. Our girls ended the tournament with a four game shutout. Beaver Lumber Wins Again On March 6, Beaver Lumber faced Tim's Fifth Wheel. The first period was a goalie's duel with no scoring on either side. Jordan Kcwell opened the scoring in the second period with his first goal this year. He tapped in a rebound from Dale Richards. Nathan Zavitz scored next, threading in a pass from Curtis Weston and Jason Devcra. Tim's entered the scoring at this point with a marker of their own. Devcra scored what was to be the winning goal of the game in the third period, one-timing a pass from Mitch Davis. With one minute to go, Tim's pulled their goalie and launched an effective offensive effort scoring their second goal. This was to no avail however, however, as the final tally stood at 3-2 thanks to some intense goal- keeping by Matt Vignalc in the final seconds of the game. Ryder Logistics Leads The Ryder Logistics Minor Bantam 'A A' Toros look a 2-1 lead in the York Simcoc finals with a 5-1 win against Newmarket. It was a penalty penalty filled affair where both teams were left puzzled by some of the officials' calls. Leading the offensive attack was Craig Baraball with a pair of goals and singles going to Ryan Smith, Justin Roussy, and Josh Rutledge. Assisting on the goals were Paul Garristo' and Rutledge with a pair, and Eric Downing, Baraball And Stuart King one each. Craig Sykes got the win in net despite being outshot by Newmarket. The Toros were missing three players due to illness and called on King from the 'A ' team to provide some help, the defensive pairs of Downing and Rob Campbell, and Colin Organ and Zack Ibbotson, kept the Newmarket players away from the net and picking up any rebounds. Excellent penalty killing from Trevor Baker, Chris Poison and Mike Trotman kept the Redrnen from getting any good scoring chances, and came close to scoring short- handed themselves. themselves. The Uxbridge Stars started started the scoring on a power play in the second. Thirty- one seconds later, Andy Chamberlain tied it up with a backhand shot in front of the net.
