About 22 Durham Regional Police officers, including the Canine Unit and the Tactical Support Unit, were brought in after police received a call about a break and enter in progress shortly after 2 p.m. DRP Sgt. Jim Grimlcy said neighbours neighbours saw two young men enter the house, and called police, "They wouldn't respond when we gave them police challenges," said Sgt. Tim Knight. "We knew they were con cealing themselves somewhere." Just before 6 p.m., officers arrested two suspects, who were found under a . wooden deck, outside the home. "It is believed they exited from a basement window which led out under the deck," said Sgt. Grimley. A crowd of about 150 bystanders gathered on the street to watch the take-down. At least one neighbour who witnessed witnessed the event was very pleased with the way Durham Regional Police handled handled the situation. "It took a long time, but nobody got hurt, and no shots were fired," said Bowmanville resident Bill McGowan, "They (the suspects) will get their time in court, but (the police) got them out safely," he said, adding he will write a letter to DRP Chief Kevin McAlpine, letting him know how impressed he was with police handling of the situation. Two Bowmanville youths, aged 16 and 17, were arrested and charged with, a number, of counts. Police are still seeking a third suspect. The 16-year-old is charged with two counts of break and enter with intent as a result of the Waverlcy Road incident, He is also charged with two counts of break, enter and theft as a result of an incident on Lover's Lane Wednesday, and break-ins to residences on Hetherington Drive and Waverlcy Road which occurred in December. He also faces one count of robbery in rela tion to an incident in which a taxi driver driver was robbed on Concession Street on Jan. 25. The 17-year-old faces one count each of break and enter with intent, and break, enter and theft. A warrant was also put out for a third youth, who is wanted for robbery and break and enter with intent, said Sgt, Grimlcy. The youth was not on the scene at the time of Wednesday's arrests. Sgt. Grimley said the police had good reason for putting such an effort into the arrests. "We knew there was a possibility these people were responsible for more than one break-in because of the rash we've been having" in the Waverlcy Road area, ho said. "I think that's one of the reasons so much effort was put into this one." The youths were held for a bail hearing. Under the Young Offenders' Act, they cannot be identified.
