School Board Hears Details on Student Assessment Program Helps Women Stop Smoking Quitting smoking is one of the best decisions people can make to improve their health. The physical and psychological addiction to tobacco, however, often makes a decision to quit difficult. Fortunately, a number of programs arc available to assist smokers in their effort to quit. "Men and women often differ in the type and need for support to become smoke-free," states Ms. Shawn Woods, public health nurse for Durham Region Health Department. Nearly one in three women smoke in Durham Region. Women are also more likely to be at home where children may be exposed to second hand smoke. Smoking indoors significantly increases the health risks for all family members. To help women become ex-smokers, a six week "Quit Smoking Program for Women" will be launched in Ajax on March 30th. Potential quitters will be supported supported in their efforts by learning: tips to help quit, ways of coping with stress, how to gain support from family and friends, Winery Wins Medals From page 2 award winner is a dessert wine with a delightful amber hue and an "apple pie in a glass" nose. Both the system-wide system-wide and provincial testing have shown steady improvement in student achievement for the Kawartha Pine Ridge Board. A small number of randomly selected schools or classes also may participate in occasional national and international science and mathematics assessments. Individual school boards do not receive their own results, since the aim of such tests is to get a broader, province-by-province or national picture. Trustees also received a presentation presentation by Dr. Ross Tilley Public School on how the school is integrating integrating technology into its program program relative to the new science and technology curriculum. In one challenge, grades seven and eight students had to apply what they learned to design a Kleenex box into a house that would transfer as little heat as possible from the outside of the house to the inside. When high- intensity spotlights were turned on within inches of the house, students used an electronic temperature temperature probe to measure the inside heat. In most of the houses, the temperature rose no more than half a degree Celsius. PI JT INSOMNIA TO BED Ah, to curl up in a warm bed and drift peacefully off to "never- neverland". Restful sleep is the cornerstone of good health - a time when our'minds and bodies rejuvenate and prepare for the day ahead. Yet, for many people, "catching some z's" is easier said than done. According to a recent Gallop poll, nearly half of all North Americans have difficulty sleeping. Insomnia costs an estimated $92.5 to $107.5 billion per year. Why do so many people have trouble getting some shut eye? According to many health professionals, high stress lifestyles and overloaded schedules are responsible for the current insomnia epidemic. Doctors of chiropractic help their patients regain balance - not only in their spines (through chiropractic adjustments), but also in their overall lives (through guiding patients toward optimal health). And a balanced life is the best defence against sleeplessness. The Dangers of Sleeping Pills Both over-the-counter sleep aids like Nytol and Sominex, as well as prescription sleeping pills like Halcion, Dalmane, Valium, Rcstoril and Seconal, may produce serious side effects - including chemical addiction, memory loss, mental confusion and stomach problems. Benzodiazepines, a group of drugs including Dalmane and Valium, are among the most widely prescribed sleep aids - and the most hazardous. Mental impairment is just one of the many well documented side effects of this class of medication. In fact, people who take benzodiazepines double their risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident (Canadian Family Physician 1998,44:799-808). Although benzodiazepines arc meant to aid sleep, they actually appear to disturb a crucial stage of sleep: REM (rapid eye movement) (Psychiatry Clinics in Neuroscience 1998; 52: 232-37). Quality REM sleep is vital to achieving peak daytime performance, learning and memory. If you aren't convinced yet that benzodiazepine can be harmful, here's one more thing to consider: these drugs may actually damage your bones. Benzodiazepines are associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis- related hip fracture (New England Journal of Medicine 1995; 332:767-73). What's Causing Your Sleep Problem? Committing to a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle - like the one advocated by your chiropractor, can ease most cases of insomnia. However, insomnia may also be a warning sign of psychological problems, including clinical depression and Sunlight Affectiveness Disorder (SAD). If you suffer from signs of depression - including hopelessness, change in eating habits, an inability to concentrate or thoughts of suicide - ask your chiropractor to refer you to a psychological professional for evaluation. Chiropractic: The First Steo to a Balanced Lifestyle Your doctor of chiropractic can show you how to get on the fast track to improved health, Chiropractors stress the importance of a well- rounded, balanced and drug-free lifestyle - the type of lifestyle that will help you conquer insomnia and keep you sleeping like a baby.
