The Canadian Statesman, Boxvmanville, Wednesday, March 31, 199V Section Two Sports Shorts BRONZE AGAIN - Bowmanvillc's Sommer West and her Toronto Acros hockey team had to settle lor the bronze medal at the Canadian Senior Women's Hockey Championships that wrapped up in Mississauga this past weekend. Toronto, who were the Ontario provincial champions, lost 2-1 to Alberta in the semi-finals. In the bronze medal game, Ontario hammered hammered New Brunswick by a 10-0 score. Quebec won the gold medal with a 4-2 decision over Alberta. TOURNAMENT TIME - On Saturday, April 3, the 13th Annual C.A.W. Skilled Traces Memorial Hockey Tournament (formerly the "Bews") will be held at the Newcastle Arena. The tournament will benefit six local charities. Action on the ice begins at 8:00 a.'m., while activities off the ice include videos, face painting, Sonshinc the clown, and a magician. Admission is a non-perishable food donation that will be sent to the Claringtort East Food Bank. TIMMY TYKE FOR TOROS - On Sunday, April 4, the Claringlon Toros Minor Novices will step onto the ice at Maple Leaf Gardens for a game against Vaughan in the Timmy Tyke Tournament. A full slate of games is scheduled throughout the day. The Toros have the honour of opening the day's events with the first game at 7:30 a.m. The Minor Novice Toros qualified by outscoring their opponents 21-0 over two games. Sixteen teams of players aged six to nine will participate in the 44th annual event. The tournament is about great hockey, fantastic sportsmanship, and the commitment of coaches, parents and able-bodied kids to raise money for children with physical disabilities. Pace 5 r Clowning Around The Orono Figure Skating Club presented two shows of Clowning Around to a packed arena on Saturday afternoon and evening. Members of the club skated to a variety of numbers, and the show also included some solos by the senior skaters. Some of the skits included Ghost Busters, clowns, and the Addams Family. National Sports successfully wrapped up their hockey season by winning every period of every game and capturing the 'A' Championship at the Innisfil-Stroud Tournament over the March Break. Mark Lemieux led the scoring in the tournament with 10 points (4 goals and 6 assists), and Chris McDaniels had eight points (2 goals and 6 assists). Chris Wood played every game in goal and only let in three goals in the entire tournament. The entire team played a strong forechecking game in the championship championship game in which they defeated Newmarket 4-1. The line of Scan Lefort, Darrin Kelly, and Stuart King scored in-every game and played very aggressively. The line of Mark Lemieux, Chris McDaniels, and Mark Bonin also played their smart passing game and had 19 points among them over the tournament. Jamie Bryant opened the scoring for National Sports in game one of the tournament, and Pete Quon snuck in off the point to bang in a slapshot to get National Sports off and running. Chris Wood was the best goalie in the tournament. At the moment, Chris McDaniels leads National Sports in scoring with 85 points (39 goals and 46 assists), Mark Lemieux is second with 79 points (28 goals and 51 assists). Garrett Dodds and Dan Cowx lead the team in being on the ice for the fewest goals against at even strength. Some exhibition games may be on the horizon as the season winds down. Shane then tied it up on a rebound. Kyle put them ahead with a good individual effort. Bobby kept the boys in the contest with timely saves, but the Union Oil team pulled away in the third ending with a 5-3 win. The Webco Crane & Hoist Major Atom Toros travelled to the Ottawa suburb of Kanata to take part in the 15th annual Ronald MacDonald Mouse Charity Hockey Tournament. The boys knew that this tournament represented represented their last hockey action for the 1998/99 hockey season, and they wanted to finish the season on a winning winning note. Friday, March 19, the Toros faced the home team Kanata Islanders, and skated to a 2-2 draw in a very tight checking affair. Tyler Ferguson and Brad Farrow each scored a goal and added an assist. Nathan Murray and Matthew Smith chipped in with assists. Mike Syers was named the "Hustler" player of the game for the Toros. , Saturday afternoon afternoon saw the Toros completely dominate dominate a team from Alexandria by a score of 8-l. The line of Salway, Bradburn and Beers led the charge with nine points. Tyler Beers led the way with two goals and one assist, Kurtis Salway and Cory Bradburn had a goal and two assists each. Jordan Beaudric had a goals and an assist, Marc Rogers and Ryan Webb rounded rounded out the scoring for the Toros. Tyler Ferguson also picked up an assist. For his effort, Tyler Beers was named "Hustler" player of the game for the Toros. Saturday night the Toros faced off against Stouffville. The boys knew that they needed a win to advance, while Stouffville only needed a tie. Both teams came out gunning for the win, and the lead changed t w i c Unfortunately late goal hands c a by Stouffville tied the game at 3-3 and ended the Toros hopes of advancing to the semi-finals. Ryan Webb, Tyler Ferguson, and Nathan Murray scored for Claringlon. Bard Farrow picked up two assists, with Mike Syers and Tyler Ferguson each picking up assists: Matthew Smith was named Toros "Hustler" of the game. Kurtis Salway and Jourdan Beaudrie represented represented the Toros in the Shooting and Skating skills competition competition and did the Claringlon Toros proud. Robbie Goddard represented represented the team in the goalies' skills competition competition and completely completely dominated the shooters, stopping stopping 11 of 12 shots in the preliminary and 5 of 6 in the final round to win the Top Goalie Trophy. The weekend ended on a high note for team captain captain Tyler Ferguson and goalie Robbie Goddard, as both were chosen to participate participate in the tournament tournament All-Star game Sunday evening.
