Adults With Flat Feet: It Gets Complicated Question: Telma, I have read with interest your articles articles on flat feet, especially flat feet with children. What I don,t understand is, why do I need to see a physiotherapist physiotherapist if I have flat feet? Let's recap what, exactly, the term "Hat feet" means. In medical terms we call it pes planus, or a loot that rolls in. If you look at a person from the back, you see that they are taking more weight on an inner arch and, as a consequence, the foot flattens you have observed an instance of flat loot. Initially this may not sound like a condition of grave concern but when on considers considers that a flat loot will affect how a person walks in combination combination with how much time us grown ups actually spend on our leet, a flat loot has very important Implications. It will affect how we walk and, ultimately, problems may develop elsewhere in our bodies, The observer can see the flattening but a more detailed understanding cl each flat- looted person's condition Is possible with a compulorizes gait analysis. Tho cliont will walk through this examination; tho weight ol a person Is lakon In different moasuros by their loot as ho/slio walks. Walking may soom llko a slmplo activity, but llioro aro throo distinct distinct parts lo tho action. First the liool strikes tho ground, then wo roll through tho mlddlo part ol tho loot and thon wo push oil with tho first and second loos, This Is tho normal slop ol a normal-looted person, person, Wlion a porson has a liai foot walking is very different. Specifically, two things will happen: They take too much weight through the heel on the side of the foot that is flat, You , will hear, what is referred to as "elephant foot": as it slams, slams. The heel hits the floor much harder that in should. I've actually seen this as it happens in the gait scan: a red area will show under the heel/ With time this will pout strain on the spring ligament under the loot - - Ihe PLANTAR FACIS - - and the suffer could develop PLANTAR FACIATIS, or heel spur syndrome. The heel does not strike very well, and the walker will roll in to the inner arch and then push oil. This is also very clear on the gait scan. With this particular patient Ihe complications complications move further up Ihe body., The loot is not taking the impact of the ground well, creating the potential lor knee, hip, and even back problems, Adults lend to take their feet lor granted and, on the surface, having a flat loot doesn't sound like such a big deal. But left untreated It can load to something as "small" as liool spur syndrome, as nagging kneo problem or persistent persistent back pain that actually limits your activity level, Tho host solution is to soo your physiotherapist (or an examination, examination, Tho locus noxl llmo will addross exactly how a Hat loot allocls tho hips, knoos, and back, Grant Physiotherapy Is located at: 214 King St, E,, Bowmanvllle (905) 623-2783 PLAY YOUR BEST GAME FORLIFEI K -ft
