According to Durham Regional Police Inspector Ross Smith, Marvin Stapleton was driving about one-and-a-half kilometres north of Highway 2, near Newtonvillc. "He had been southbound on Stapleton Road when he slowed for a deer in the middle of the road. He was then struck by a second deer," says Insp. Smith. The second deer had run out from the east side of the road. Insp. Smith says it's not surprising to see deer in this area at this time of year. About $1,500 damage was done to the driver's side of Stapleton's vehicle. Stapleton was unhurt in the incident. Insp. Smith says there's no word on the deer's condition. Clarington Council Briefs Capsule Comments with Neale McLean, B.Sc. Phm. It's amazing how anyone gets pregnant. The average number of sperm produced in each ejaculation is about 200 million. Of that number only about 300 get to where the egg is to be fertilized. And only one of those may make it into the egg and fertilize it. Not very good odds! Many cancer patients are tempted to try unconventional and unproved therapies. The Canadian Cancer Society has' supported the publication of "A Patient's Guide to Choosing Unconventional Therapies". It helps people decide whether a specific treatment is right for them. Copies can be obtained from your local CCS office or by phoning 1-888-939-3333. Men who report eating at least one ounce offish per day had a 38% lower risk of dying of heart disease over the next 30 years than those men who ate no fish at all. Women get heart attacks 10 - 15 years later than men. That's why there is a perception that it's a man's disease. But a Canadian woman's risk of dying of heart disease is four times greater than her risk of dying from breast cancer. We believe it's your right to know about the medications you put in' your body. Councillor Jim Schell felt that a public information information meeting would be premature at this time because the effects of the spill are not yet known. THE SPINAL COLUMN Over 2 million North Americans suffer from whiplash injury each year. And for many, whiplash produces chronic, seemingly inescapable pain. But you don't have to put up with whiplash induced pain. Chiropractic can deliver the lasting solution you've been searching for! Whiplash occurs when the head is suddenly jerked back and forth, or side to side. This movement causes trauma and impact to the body. Women and children are more prone to injury than men, and older adults are more prone than young adults. This condition doesn't just occur in car accidents it can result from sports injuries falls, occupational injuries and bicycle crashes. "But mv car is OK!" Even if your car wasn't damaged you ate still at risk of whiplash injury. And you don't need to be speeding to suffer a whiplash injury either. Experts say the accidents of only 5 mph have produced whiplash injury. Delayed Reaction Perhaps the most troubling aspect is that pain is not a good indicator of damage. In fact, symptoms may take years to develop. Whiplash causes shifts in the spine - including a reversal of the neck's normal curve. These changes increase your chances of future problems, including osteoarthritis. That is why it is imperative to get a thorough chiropractic check up after being involved in any accident - even one that seems like "no big deal". Don't Foreet the Kids! If you know children who were passengers in a car involved in an accident make sure they are evaluated by a chiropractor. Kids often fail to complain or articulate injury. However, whiplash can have devastating effects on a growing spine. Timing is crucial when it comes to preventing whiplash-related conditions because early intervention can ward off chronic physical damage. So, make sure to get your kids checked by a chiropractor within 72 hours of any accident. Chiropractic: Your First Choice for Whiolash Relief For many people with whiplash injury, traditional medical treatment simply doesn't work. In fact, 43% of whiplash patients will endure longterm longterm "chronic" symptoms, despite conventional medical treatment. On the other hand, chiropractic care offers lasting results. In fact one study found that 93% of subjects with chronic whiplash pain improved with chiropractic care (Injury 1996; 27:643-5). Another landmark study showed that most "traditional" techniques were ineffective - including soft cervical collars, corticosteroid injection, therapeutic ultrasound and muscle relaxants. In contrast they found chiropractic adjustments provide effective relief and recommended chiropractic care for the management of whiplash injury. Whiplash will hasten the development of spinal subluxations - bones out of alignment causing pressure on the nerves. Research shows that chiropractic adjustments correct, the problems associated with whiplash, including subluxations (JMPT 1983; 6:17-23).- So if you have suffered a whiplash injury, look to chiropractic for lasting relief and prevention of future pain.
