After posting three successive successive wins during the pre-season, the local Jr. B entry opened the Ontario Lacrosse Association regular season on Saturday night in Huntsville with a convincing convincing 16-5 victory. Kurt Kirncr led the way offensively with an eight point night, collecting collecting three goals and five assists. "We arc going to be a very exciting team to watch this year," he vowed. Local lacrosse fans will get their first opportunity opportunity to see for themselves when Clarington hosts a return engagement with Huntsville on Friday night at the Recreation Complex. Game time for the home opener is 8:00 p.m. Coming off a 15-5 record last season, Edgar is confident that the team won't suffer from a lack of motivation in defence of their national title. The motivation, motivation, he says, is in the defence. "It's always a lot harder to defend a title than it is to win it the first time," he began. "Especially in junior where there is such a large turnover of players each year. "But, with the veteran make up of our squad, and a lot of graduating players, this is their final chance to win a national championship." The home opener is Friday night against Huntsville at 8:00 p.m. Despite getting the regular season underway, the final roster roster of the Green Gaels is a long way from being completed. Edgar noted that there are "still changes" to be made, as they await players to filter down from the parent club, the Jr. A Whitby Warriors. "I'd like to see our roster set sooner then later," Edgar hoped, but realized that he is unable to set a time frame. He estimates there are at least a half dozen changes still to be made. Some of the changes the club is undergoing include the addition addition of a strong crop of rookies from the Ontario midget championship championship team in Whitby from a year ago. Heading up the strong cast of rookies is Clarington's Stephen Hoar, who spent the winter as a member of the Bowmanvillc Eagles in the Provincial Junior Hockey League. Another couple of rookies that Edgar singled out as having a strong start to the season are Vinnic Crawford and Ryan Sallie, along with goaltender John Cheseborough. Sallic was particularly impressive in the season opener with a five-point night against Huntsville. At the other end of the spectrum, spectrum, a number of veteran players players arc expected to assume a leadership role. "We've got all kinds of leadership," leadership," said Edgar. He will be looking to Kurt Kirner, Saul Rochelcau Stefan Hewak, Bryan Power, Ryan Unwin, and Mike Rowland to help guide the team through the season and into the playoffs. playoffs. The ultimate goal is a berth in the Founder's Cup in August, which will be held in Milton. Dave Edgar Head Coach "We have a better than legitimate legitimate shot to make it," predicted predicted Edgar. "We have the poise and drive to make it, and I know we have the talent." Clarington's stiffest competition competition in their division is expected expected to come from Nepean, Akwesasne, and Scarborough. In the other division, Six Nations and Elora are expected to be strong.
