There were 7 3/4 tables for cards Wednesday evening at Hampton. Winners were high - Bernice Renton 84, Ace Richards 82, Ruby Smith 79, Franc Svclcc 78, Lloyd Broome 74. Low - Ruby Griffin. Most lone hands - Ace Richards. Sara Clarke and Ruby Griffin had to look after two little skunks. There were some lucky draws won by Fred Ashton, Verna Slute (2), Marg Hall and Marie Gibson. Sec you this week. We were down in numbers numbers this week for cards at Solina. There were 7 1/4 tables. The winners were high - John Broome 96, Lyra Flinloff 96, Em Brown 81, Clarence Bray 80. Most lone hands - John Broome. Most honest player - Harry Knox. Lucky draws - Lyra Flintoff, Harvey Yellowlees, Viola Ashton, Helen Lavender, Em Brown, George Gilroy and Charles Langmaid. Helen Lavender and Lillie Finch served lunch. This Friday, May 14, will be the last card party at Solina until September. The men will be looking after the lunch. The most lone hands for all the season will be announced. Come on out on Friday for the last party. Saturday the church board of Stewards held a Silent Auction at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. It was an interesting day. There were many bids on the articles. One had to check often to make sure someone had not raised the bid. At 2:00 p.m. Francis Johnston sounded the gong and bidding ceased. Joan Blackburn, lead Steward, read the high bidders. Treasurer Francis Johnston and helper Harry Knox col lected the money. From the auction and the food booth well over $3,000.00 was added to the treasury. Thanks to all who donated, bought and helped in any way. There was a good congregation congregation for Mother's Day service at Eldad on Sunday. Fred and Bernice Watson were the greeters and Laura Hinchey the lay reader. Reverend Munro had a Mother's Day story for the children. His message was "We Arc God's Children". The choir, along with the Junior Choir, gave a lovely number "God Be In Our Home". Thanks, Ron for your musical leadership. At the closing of the service service the U.C.W. presented Donna Johnston with a life membership pin, acknowledging acknowledging her service to the group, her present position as president of Oshawa Prcsbyterial and on Conference committees and the Quin-Mo-Lac board. Following the presentation the congregation were invited invited to a reception in the lower hall. Official'Board meets at Eldad May 19 at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, May 7 the rural bowling league had their annual banquet at the Base Line Community Centre. President Jim Coombcs welcomed everyone everyone and led in the singing of the Grace. At the head table were Ken Bragg, the treasurer, treasurer, Doug Caston, the secretary secretary and his wife, president Jim and his wife and Brian Annis, 50/50 draw chairperson chairperson and his wife. Following a lovely turkey dinner served by the Base Line Community Centre, six lucky ladies were the winners winners of door prizes. Brian Annis won the men's 50/50 draw. Ken Bragg, in his usual jovial way, gave out some fun prizes to the bowlers and read an original story from which they wrote down how many of the bowlers were mentioned in it. The objectives of the study include: • characterizing the natural heritage features and functions and linkages within the subwatershed; • evaluating existing and proposed land uses and identifying constraints to development; • providing an action plan for land use development, stormwater management and rehabilitation of the subwatershed. . The work of the consultant is to be guided by a Steering Committee, to be made up of representatives from the Municipality of Clarington, the Region of Durham, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority. The Municipality is also seeking two residents to sit on the Steering Committee, one resident to represent urban interests and the other to represent rural intorosts. The study Is expected to conclude oarly in tho yoar 2000. I Y Of 1 a ting ton Solina News The trophy winners were announced by Jim Coombcs and assisted by Doug Caston. The Hampton team were the winners of first place with Solina the "runners "runners up". Receiving individual individual trophies were Henry Pokorski for high average 209, Tim Jukes for high single single 353, Ron White for high triple 833, Bob Simpson for low single 82, Derek Page for low average 146.. Mo'st improved player Jim Fetchison. The Sportsman's trophy was won by Lloyd Broome. Members of the Hampton team were Doug Caston, Ron White, Ron Roy, Dave Davidson, Henry Pokorski, Don Dair and Brian Annis. Of the Solina Team the members are: Lloyd Broome, Ron Broome, Phillip Broome, Don Taylor, Jim Fetchison, Bruce Taylor and Clarence Bray. Any who so wished remained to play cards for awhile, The high lady and the most lone hands prize was won by Karen Dair. The high man was Harvey Yellowlees. Low man was Ron Roy and low lady Judy Reavcl-Roy. Thanks to the executive for an enjoyable evening and for the clock they gave me to keep my reporting on time. Also the bouquet of carnations to my wife for her assistance. Several members of the Solina Women's Institute attended the Durham West District Annual at Blackstock on Thursday, May 6. Mothers of thé community community were honoured on their special day with visits, cards, gifts and phone calls from their families which I am sure were enjoyed as they were at our house. Eldad U.C.W. Report The Eldad U.C.W. gathered gathered at the home of Mary Millson, May 3rd at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast. 18 members members enjoyed the meal served by Mary assisted by Doris Hills. Fifteen members plan to attend the Ecumenical dinner on May 10 at Zion Church and 5 plan to go to the Day Tyrone News Church Picnic Coming Up by Jacqueline Vaneyk Wasn't that a wonderful rain! It started slowly enough that it nearly all soaked into the ground. Corn planting is nearly done for a lot of us; next come soybeans. It is still quite cool to plant my garden, but my cold frame lettuce and onions arc doing nicely. The numbers for the Big Brother Bowling arc in and Enniskillcn- Tyrone charge raised over $1100, more than any other organization. Well done, bowlers! On Sunday, May 2, Murray and Arlene Yco, Bessie and Paul Vaneyk attended the reception for Bruce Yco of Orono on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The church and Sunday School were cleaned by some willing workers last Saturday. A big thank you to all those who helped, ■ The church picnic will be at Enniskillen Conservation Area on Sunday, June 13. Please mark your calendars as there will be no regular services; an outdoor service will lake place with the picnic. Don't forget the supper at Enniskillen Church on Saturday, May 15, beginning at 4:00 p.m. It is always a good supper and a chance to visit with our neighbours. Apart on June 9 at the Stouffville Blind Mission. Two gift baskets were made by the president and secretary secretary as our contribution to the Silent Auction. The response forms requested by the Task Group on Women in the United Church were discussed. Larainc Bennett gave a summary summary of the replies she has received from the younger women. Mary Millson led the worship following the meeting meeting theme on Christian Stewardship. The Scripture was Romans 12, 6-17 and the meditation used two story illustrations. Lois Yellowlees gave the talk on Stewardship using as her resource articles from past and recent Observer publications regarding changing attitudes in the church of "ways to do" Stewardship and some upbeat ideas that have worked for some congregations. congregations. Community Day Rained Out Although an all-day downpour on Saturday, May 8th, cancelled the Neighbourhood Watch Community Day at Mearns Park, a few volunteers took refuge in the gazebo and made sure neighbours and friends could still enter their names in the draws.
