Please give the Gift of Life, Concerts in The Park Set to Start in June Rotary Park will be the place to be Thursday evenings again this summer. Concerts in the Park -- the free summer- long concert scries -- gets underway June 10. This is the third full summer of Concerts in the Park. The idea for the free scries came about as a result of the dedication of the Colville Clock Tower in Rotary Park in 1996. Shortly after the park opened, Brian Purdy, Garth Gilpin and Ron Hooper came up with the idea of bringing entertainment to the park. A few trial concerts were held that summer. In 1997, the first full schedule of 12 concerts was held. The concerts are completely free and open to the public, thanks to generous generous sponsorship from a number of local businesses. Major sponsors this year include Goodyear, Blue Circle Cement, Canada Trust and the Municipality of Clarington. This year's line-up is sure to please. The series begins June 10th with a visit from the Oshawa Temple Salvation Army Band. On June 17, audiences can enjoy Brookfield, a group presenting a showcase showcase of songs ranging from a cappella to East Coast melody. To help kick off the Fabulous 50s sidewalk sale in downtown Bowmanvillc, the Lincolnaires will bring their old time rock and roll to the park June 24. Organizers are inviting the audience to show up in "night attire." Anyone who docs will be eligible eligible to enter a draw to win one of four pairs of tickets to The Pyjama Game at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. The tickets are compliments of Ed Mirvish Productions, through Randy Àlldread of Bowmanvillc. On Canada Day, July 1, audiences will be treated to a new band. Evidence, a jazz quartet, will take to the stage in the Park. Pine Ridge Brass will be the attraction attraction on July 8. The band is comprised of two trumpets, a French horn, a trombone trombone and a tuba. The band's repertoire includes classical, contemporary, baroque, Broadway, marches, opera, solo features and pop compositions. Swing Shift will bring their Big Band sounds to the park July 15. And the Big Band era will continue July 22 with a visit from The Classic Swing Orchestra. A visit from the Bowmanvillc Legion pipe band along with Harmony Brass was "extremely popular last year," says Purdy. They'll take to the stage July 29. Popular Newfoundland group, Celtic Storm, will be at Rotary Park August 5. The group mixes tunes by Spirit of the West and Great Big Sea, along with a hearty brew of traditional step dancing tunes, jigs and waltzes. Purdy says the Cobourg Concert Band loves playing in Bowmanvillc because the "crowds are so large and appreciative." The Cobourg band will bring its mix of marches, Broadway musical selections and transcriptions from the classics to the Park on August 12. August 19 promises to be a special Provincial Cuts Mean No Tax Increase Within Clarington by Michelle Wyton Siaff Writer Municipal taxes may be going up this year, but your overall tax bill won't change. Clarington Regional Councillor, and Finance Committee Chair, John Mutton, announced at Monday's Council meeting that due to a reduction reduction in the education portion of the provincial tax bills, the residential tax rate will remain at the same level as last year. "It's my pleasure to announce that Clarington will remain at the 1.54 per cent tax rate that we were at last year," said Mutton. "Changes in the education education portion of the Municipality's tax bill have negated the impact of the 1.2 per cent regional increase and the 6.84 per cent municipal municipal increase." In the provincial provincial budget released May 4, the educational portion of the municipal tax bill was slashed by 10 per cent. And that has gone a long way to help Clarington balance balance the budget, said Mutton. "What Clarington residents residents arc getting is increased services services next year for the same tax rate," he said. "We'll have more policing, better municipal services services and better roads and all that will come with no increase to the municipal tax bill." The 1999 municipal budget received final approval Monday, May 10th. night as local national fiddling champion, Mark Sullivan, takes to the stage. Sullivan will be joined by three other former national champions this year in a group calling itself McLeod.. Tire season wraps up with the evcr-popular Chaser on August 19. The band features top 40 country tunes along with music from the 50s and rock and roll. All of the concerts get underway promptly .at 7 p.m. and wrap up at about 9 p.m. Purdy urges people to come to the park early, and maybe even bring a picnic. The concerts run rain or shine, so don't forget umbrellas, lawn chairs, and blankets. "I think it's a very special place. All of this was brought about because of the special feelings feelings we have for Rotary Park," says Purdy. Posters and schedules will be available soon at locations throughout Clarington.
