Seventy-five women of varying faiths from around the area attended the dinner, Zion United Church is presently celebrating its 150th Anniversary and the women hosting- the event were beautifully dressed in long, pillowing dresses in celebration. Immediately following following grace by Marg Geisberger, a marvelous array of food was thoroughly enjoyed by all. In the sanctuary, Shirley Sobil led all in an enthusiastic enthusiastic sing-a-long of various hymns to begin the evening. Joanne Geisberger introduced our guest speaker for the evening, the most inspiring Betty Turcott of Faith United Church in Courtice. An accomplished author, a tireless volunteer and a great story teller are but a few of Betty's accomplishments. accomplishments. As one of only 50 Canadian delegates, Betty comes to us with her stories of the closing of the Ecumenical Decade of Churches In Solidarity with Women held in Zimbabwe South Africa. The decade was launched by The World Council of Churches in 1988. Betty's stimulating stories of her experiences in South Africa bring lo us the reality of how much more work there is to be done both on the homefront and globally. Who will roll away the stone? Betty reminds us there are many stones yet to be removed in both the church and society that impede women being treated equally. Violence against women in all forms and in all countries is a sin in God's eyes. Betty reminds us hearts are broken broken open to love, forgiveness and healing. In South Africa over the past five years the rules of apartheid have all been repealed. The prayers and this work will continue to bring hope and change to the African people with the building of new homes, new business and education. Joanne Geisberger extended our deep gratitude and our thanks to Betty for sharing this experience witli us. Shirley Sobil and Joanne Geisberger entertained us witli a very pleasant arrangement of musical pieces. Donna Johnston expressed our appreciation to Zion United Church for hosting the ecumenical dinner.
