President Donna Barkey extended a warm welcome to all and read a poem Coming of Spring. The meeting opened with the Ode and Mary Stewart Collect, The April minutes were read and approved. The minutes and recommendations recommendations of the Executive and minutes of directors meetings were read and approved. A recommendation recommendation was put forth that we start our winter meetings earlier. Moved and carried. Several letters were received, one regarding the payment of once a year or semi annually to the Salvation Army for our adopted child. Another letter pertaining to Associated Country Women of the World (A.C.W.W.) Triennial to be held the year two thousand thousand and one in Hamilton June 11th - 18th. Several thank you notes read from members chosen to be recognized recognized by the town. Jennifer Bowman reported on the Interest courses. The Solina school reunion committee would appreciate any articles, pictures pictures or papers for the 100th anniversary. This to be August 6th weekend. Jean Taylor District Director gave a report of the District Annual held at Blackstock United Church evening of May 6th. Marion Broome, group leader of the cast group, opened the program program with a reading tilled Mother. The -Motto - The making of a home was given by Pat Best. Betty Grant introduced our guest speaker Dr. Roy Rowscll. At present time he is Medical leader of Chronic Care at Oshawa hospital. The purpose of the International Year of the Older Person is to foster the International Awareness of the importance of Seniors role in society. It is estimated estimated a great number of Canadian Seniors spend time in volunteering. Lois Neill expressed our thanks to Dr. Rowscll for an informative evening. A time of fellowship followed in the lower hall and our A.C.W.W. draws took place. P.R.O. Bernice Watson Donation for Hospital Chaplaincy Mary Hunt, Ruth Hinklcy and Carol King of the Wilmot Creek Worship Committee presented Rev. Bruce White, Coordinator of Chaplaincy Services at Lakcridgc Health Bowmanvillc, with a cheque for $500 last week. The money was raised during the community's monthly intcr-dcnominational worship service. Helping the Hospital Kristina MacDonald, Lyndscy Muir and Melissa MacDonald presented a cheque to Catharine Fiorillo, Community Events Assistant at The Hospital For Sick Children Foundation, on behalf of the students at Dr. Lydia Trull Public School in Courticc. Students raised $11,414.60 for the Hospital by taking pledges for the Spelling Bee. St. Paul's United Church Hosts Women's Breakfast The 5th Women's Breakfast was held on Saturday, May 15th, 1999 at St. Paul's United Church in Bowmanvillc. Billie Kemp introduced the guest speaker, Reverend Karen Hamilton of St. James-Bond United Church in Toronto. Karen is a very active and dynamic woman. As well as a wife, mother of three and the minister of St. James-Bond Church, she is also a director of ministry candidate at Emmanuel College, a director of the Christian Jewish Dialogue Toronto, chair of "Bearing Faithful Witness" National steering group United Church of Canada, co-chair of the interchurch, interchurch, inter-faith committee Toronto. She has also had publications in a variety of church and theological journals. Karen spoke on the genealogy of Jesus. After reading about the birth of Jesus in the book of Matthew, Karen gave an inspiring account of the life of four brilliant, creative, resourceful women. These women Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba are all found in the Bible to be direct ancestors of Jesus and as Karen noted the complexities in the lives of these women so many years ago can still be seen in lives today. A delightful breakfast prepared by the ladies of St. Paul's United Church and served by the youth of St. Paul's was very much enjoyed by 82 women from around the area with one guest from as far away as Windsor. Reverend Nancy Knox, of St. Paul's United Church, gave the blessing for the food. A special thank-you was extended to the women who prepared prepared and served the breakfast. Reverend Nancy Knox also extended our thanks to Reverend Karen Hamilton for a fascinating message. The Fall Women's Breakfast will be held on October 23rd, 1999 with the guest speaker Bishop Ann Tottenham. Candidates in the Provincial election have been invited to these forums ro express their views on particular issues and answer questions from those in attendance. The first of these forums was held on Monday, May 17, 1999 at Pineridge School, 2155 Liverpool Rd. North in Pickering from 7 - 9:30 p.m. in the riding of Pickcring-Ajax-Uxbridgc. The Whitby-Ajax Riding forum will be held at the Sinclair Secondary School, 380 Taunton Rd. E., Whitby on Thursday, May 20 from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. On May 25 we will be hosting a forum at Bowmanvillc High School, Liberty St. N., Bowmanvillc in the Durham Riding and the Oshawa riding forum will be held May 26 at CAW Hall, 1425 Phillip Murray Avenue, Oshawa. Both of these forums will run from 7:00- 9:30 p.m. The topics chosen by the organizers for the Pickcring-Ajax-Uxbridgc forum arc Health, Education and Social Services. The forums in the riding of Whitby-Ajax and the Durham riding will cover the topics of Health and Education and the topic for the Oshawa riding forum will be Health Care and health related issues. The public is invited to attend the forum and participate participate in the question period. The forums were planned prior to the election call, however, they arc now very timely in giving voters the opportunity to hear, first hand, each candidate's responses.
