Conor Nelson, a student at Sinclair High School in Whitby, was named winner in the competition held earlier this year. He will perform a flute solo June'5 with the Oshawa-Durham Symphony Orchestra in a special concert focused on youth. Conor Nelson began his flute studies studies less than five years ago. Since then, he has won a number of competitions, played with a symphony orchestra and won impressive scholarships to further his studies. His latest award is being named winner of the Oshawa-Durham Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. Judges Marco Parisotto, conductor and music director of the ODSO and Sun-Young Lee, associate conductor, praised his playing. "He is a brilliant student and has a musical career ahead of him," Parisotto said. Previously, Conor has won first place in the Festival Wind Orchestra's Concerto competition and the senior instrumental trophy of the Oshawa- Whitby Kiwanis Music Festival. He is a member of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, in which he has performed several first flute parts. Two runners-up in the competition will also perform solos with ODSO. Marie-Thercsc Gummer, 13, also of Whitby, will perform on piano and Christa Robinson, 20, an Oshawa high school graduate, will also perform an oboe solo. Both were named as runners-up runners-up in the ODSO competition. The June 5 competition will also feature the Youth Orchestra of Durham in a concert entitled Stars on Broadway.
