Tour Durham Passports are Available Art was spilling all over last week as artist Cynthia Harper unveiled her new work "Spillway Gate" at the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington on Friday. The piece, which is currently currently being exhibited on the north side of the Visual Arts Centre will only be there temporarily. "It's up until next May and then I'll come up and take it down," said Harper. "It's part of the Art in the Parks project." Harper said that "Spillway Gate" was created created specifically for the Visual Arts Centre. "This piece came together together based on historic milling imagery and information I've gathered from the Bowmanville Museum and also from some other library research that I did," said Harper. "So that's where the diagonal forms come from and the circular shapes in the centre arc all based on that type of research." Although not a Clarington artist, Harper says that she has had an interest in mill towns- for quite some time. "I read the call for entries for the Arts in the Parks project and that this was an historic mill. I also live in a town called Millville," said Harper. There's a whole world out there for you to explore and now, passports passports will only cost you a dollar. The Tour Durham Passport system was launched on Wednesday, May 19, as Councillor John Mutton presented Regional Chair Roger Anderson with a Passport booklet. The handbook, which Regional Police Brief Oshawa Man Charged in Sexual Assault A 39-year-old Oshawa man has been arrested after a 14-year-old Pickering girl reported a man she -met through an adult-only telephone telephone chat line assaulted her. I've had a chance to visit some of them and attend special events at a number of schools. I was pleased to be at Newcastle Public School to judge at the school's Science and Technology fair. It was great to see how innovative the students arc at putting together their projects. Even the youngest of students did a great job. The students, when questioned questioned by the judges, were able to explain the process they used in their scientific study and were eager to show off their results. I think some of them were surprised at the results they obtained! Congratulations to Principal Margarete Cameron and the school staff for the work that went into making this a great learning experience for the children. There is a special program program operating at Central Public School in Bowmanville. Teacher Ann Cox has set up a process of creating children's books on tape. Volunteers arc provided provided with a tape recorder, blank tapes and the appropriate appropriate books to record the books at home. The children use the tapes to help them as they read the books at school. It is a great way to improve their literacy skills. This program requires extra work for Ann and we truly appreeiale her commitment to the students, 1 had the pleasure of presenting presenting Ann with two new tape recorders lor litis program, program, Botrie Associates, of Toronto donated the tape recorders. Ann can always use more volunteers and equipment, If you are interested interested in helping out you can contact Ann Cox at Central Public School, 623-5614. At Dr. Emily Stowe Public School in Courlieu Principal Susan Metkl and her staff have developed a new Intermediate Music program. This unique elementary elementary program provides a blend of electronic keyboards keyboards and band instruments. instruments. The School Council at Stowe made a generous financial contribution to help with the purchase of band instruments. School Superintendent John Reid along with Dan Kapp and Doug Dewcll, Educational Resource teachers assisted the school in getting the program finalized. I can hardly wait to hear the first performance! I believe the Arts arc an important part of a child's education. The ARTSarmann '99 at Clarke High School proves my point. For two evenings, this joint effort of the staff and students of Clarke High School and the Fines Senior Public School involved hundreds of students and staff in providing parents and community friends with a least of the incredible talent talent our students possess, Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to put on such a fine demonstration demonstration of what the arts can do lor all of us!
