Radiation Doses Within Limits Facilities Budget On Target, Says District School Ba. The local public school board is right on target with its proposed 1999- 2000 budget for facilities services. Despite major shortfalls in other budget areas, the board of trustees found that the proposed spending on facilities services matches the expected expected revenue in all areas. The facilities services portion of the budget covers the physical operating of schools and other buildings, utili- Council Briefs Hired Dan Cousins has been hired to take on the role of Manager of Arenas in the Community Services Department. These structures structures add up to a total of 4,781,568 square feet. To maintain the buildings, the board will receive the following grants from the Ministry of Education and Training: $26-million for school operations, operations, including custodial and maintenance maintenance services, energy costs and material material supplies; $4.5-million for school renewal, including asbestos inspections inspections and abatement, renovations to accommodate program changes, roofing roofing and window replacements, heating system upgrades, painting, flooring replacements, paving, and upgrades to school sites and portables and $1.6- million for new pupil places. The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) says radiation doses due to emissions from the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station are well within acceptable limits. The AECB says the dose from the station was approximately approximately 0.5 microsiev- erts between January 1 and March 31, 1999. By comparison, a single chest x-ray causes about 70 microsievcrts of radiation. A microsievcrt is an international unit used to measure radiation dose. The radiation doses measured arc based on the most exposed people living near the station. The measurement would typically apply to people living just outside the station boundary boundary who are at their residences 24 hours a day, who drink local water, and eat local fish and produce, says a media release from the AECB. The doses were calculated using actual data from routine analysis of air, water, fish and vegetation samples, as well as station emission emission data. Most people would actually receive less than the doses indicated indicated because they have different eating habits or live further away from the station. Radiation doses decrease significantly significantly as the distance distance away from the station increases. Since the path way for liquid emissions is less dominant, more than 90 per cent of the radiation dose received from the station was due to air emissions.
