The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Tuesday, June 1, 1999 Paste 3 Time to Cast a Ballot Ontario Voters go to the Polls for a Provincial Election on Thursday, June 3 liberals I have appreciated the opportunity to meet with so many Durham voters during my door-to-door canvass. A constant theme that I have encountered is that the Harris government has gone too far too fast. People feel that our health care programs are less reliable and that our education system has deteriorated. Our Liberal 20/20 Plan offers a new direction for our community and our province. Our health care system is in crisis. In 1995, Mike Harris promised "not one cent from health care". However, the truth is that over $1 billion has been cut from, health care. The Liberal 20/20 Plan will restore the Ontario health care system by hiring over 10,000 nurses, ending the long wait for cancer treatment and emergency room assessment, and by promoting follow-up care for those who need it. Locally, I will work for fast-tracking the redevelopment redevelopment of Lakcridgc Health, including the Durham Regional Cancer Centre. As an experienced teacher with more than twenty-five years in the classroom, I am upset by the turmoil our education education system has been thrown into by the Harris government. The sad fact is that here too Harris cut $1 billion from the system. Ontario spends less per student than the state of Mississippi, as well as 53 other jurisdictions in North America. A Liberal government will scrap the Harris funding formula, formula, will reduce class sizes in primary grades and will restore Garry Minnie funding to special education programs and adult education. We will-stop the fighting and put the emphasis back on children children and learning. There is no doubt that Mike Harris has failed the test of fiscal fiscal responsibility. Since 1995 the provincial debt has grown by $23 billion, or over $7500 per Ontario household. In fact Ontario still has the same credit credit rating as it did during the NDP years. A Liberal government government will put Ontario's fiscal house in order by balancing the budget and then using the surplus surplus to reduce taxes, pay down the debt and invest further in health care and education. The Liberals will save millions by banning partisan government advertising and by cutting the use of high priced consultants. We will also end the downloading downloading of provincial services onto your property tax bill. I invite you to vote on June 3 for a party with a clear vision for Ontario's future. Vote for a party that "Puts People First". I look forward to serving as your M.P.P. NDP Why would Jim Morrison make a good MPP to represent the riding of Durham? Jim Morrison believes in Ontario. It is a great Province with a proud history. Jim believes Ontario can and must be better. Jim believes we can have better hospitals, better schools, better universities, better air to breathe and better opportunities for young people. Jim Morrison believes life in Ontario can be better for working working families and he will do everything he can to make that happen. Over the past four years, our long-cherished values of compassion, compassion, ethics, and co-operation co-operation have been superceded by the bottom line - the quest for big profits. Politicians have been sacrificing their own people people - people like Eugene Upper, a homeless man who died on the streets in Toronto. They found him with his hands frozen to his face in despair. For me Eugene Upper will always be a symbol of the times we are being forced to endure, to appease the corporations corporations and the banks. Jim Morrison will bring compassion compassion to the legislature on behalf of the people of Durham. Corporate profits are at an all time high. PC The purpose of this letter is to respond to the question, "Why I should be Durham's next MPP". Over the past four years it has been my privilege to serve as your elected member member of Provincial Parliament. Since 1982,1 have been elected as a school trustee, a municipal councillor and a Durham Regional councillor. During my time in elected public office, I have gained the knowledge and experience to serve you effectively. I want to continue to be an informed and effective voice for Durham. When elected in 1995, we inherited an $11.3 billion dollar dollar annual deficit. The provincial provincial debt had doubled to almost $100 billion dollars. People voted for me in 1995 because they knew we could no longer continue to tax and spend our way out of every challenge. Each and every one of us has contributed to the recovery in Ontario. We have almost eliminated eliminated the deficit, reduced provincial income tax by 30% and created over 544,000 net new jobs. Each day since 1995, 12 people per hour have left welfare for a job. Unlike most governments, we have kept the promises we made. During this election in 1999, I have met with people and listened. You have told me you knew changes were necessary. necessary. Now you want us to manage manage the changes we have made. I have heard the issues that are important to you. You want a reliable and dependable health care system, excellence in our education system, a healthy environment, safe communities, communities, lower taxes and a strong John O'Toole economy. Our commitments to you include: • A guaranteed 20%' increase in health care funding ($22.7 billion); • A 20% reduction in provincial income tax; • A 20% reduction in tlic provincial portion of the property property tax; • A Charter of Rights and Responsibilities in education; • Helping welfare recipients to get the skills to get a job; • A $20 billion SuperBuild Growth Fund to develop our infrastructure; • A balanced budget as promised in early 2000; • A $2 billion payment against our accumulated debt; • A strong economy with 825,000 net new jobs. On June 3rd, I respectfully ask for your vote to continue representing you effectively at Queen's Park. I enjoy working with people, and helping to solve problems. I want to continue continue to work for a better future for everyone. I will continue to be honest, accessible, accountable accountable and responsive to all of my constituents.
