Well friends, summer is finally here. It's hot and sunny and following the lovely lovely rain last week things arc off to a great start. Farm fields arc fast "greening up", the apple blossoms sure looked lovely and crops look great! The Challiccs took off 2 days last week to visit 3 daughters in Peterborough and happy to report one daughter Laurie is home to Orono after many weeks in Memorial Hospital. Congratulations to Bill and Donna Morrison on the grand opening of their new hardware store formerly the Rolplt Home Hardware on Saturday, May 29. Bill and Donna have been very active members in their community for many years. They arc wished every success in their new endeavour. Port Hope Flower Convention An excellent learning ses- ù) 1997 IIYH Safety Group sion was held Wednesday, May 26 in Port Hope, sponsored sponsored by O.H.A. (Ont. Hort. Association). A large crowd was in attendance, with five local members from Orono joining the session. There were 19 classes for all folks to learn to judge and given excellent advice etc. to gardening and exhibiting. Altogether a real fun day out. Community Care Luncheon Held Wednesday, May 6, in lower main hall of Orono United Church with a good attendance of Seniors. This is the last noon luncheon until fall. The ladies of St. Saviour's Church catered for a delectable roast beef dinner, mashed potatoes, salads, salads, peas and lovely cake for dessert. Dini Schocnmakcr welcomed all and Reverend Russell gave the blessing before lunch. Excellent choir music was provided by "Country Town Singers" from Bowmanvillc and it was much enjoyed by all present. Lucky draws - Mary Thompson, Bernice Partner, Agnes Schoffield, Wilma Kirk, Shirley Bubar, Velma Jakeman, Lena Graham. Very lovely weather on Saturday and the town very lively with "Yard ■ Sales". The Durham Sr. Citizens held a very excellent Yard Sale of dishes, cookware, coffee makers, makers, plants, gifts and also a tasty bake sale! Added to this coffee, tea, muffins and tea biscuits added an excellent touch. Friends, if you haven't ever enjoyed the fun of attending one of these sociable events. Try it, you'll like it. Musical Extravaganza, Saturday evening, May 29, held in Harmony Baptist Church; With headliner headliner Band 'The Durham Benefit Wind Ensemble with conductor conductor Albert Curtis Jr. as conductor. This opening by Nancy Kelly, a wonderful Orono News Gospel hymn sing, accompanied accompanied by 25 pc. band, really got the audience's attention. This evening was sponsored sponsored in aid of Gate 3:16 "Home For Street People" in downtown Oshawa, which is in "financial stress" at this lime. In these times a "sad commentary", commentary", as our government turned down aid, this is a religious religious matter (some excuse). Such favourites "The Sound of Music", "Amazing Grace" "Georgia On My Mind" etc. were performed. The closing number, "Amazing Grace" was arranged by Albert Curtis. The band docs benefit concerts concerts and 1 would hazard a guess, non of the members are over 20 years of age. Don't tell me all young folks have gone wrong! Church News Sunday, June 6 - Services of Holy Communion at Kirby 9:30 a.m. and Orono 11 a.m. Donations for the East Clarington Food Bank would be appreciated. Sunday, June 6 - Evening Healing Service is cancelled. Sunday, June 13 - Regular service at Kirby 9:30 a.m. Orono Sunday School Anniversary II a.m. Special Guest is Sunshine the Clown. The Sunday School will be barbecuing hot dogs and hamburgers. hamburgers. The congregation is asked to bring cither salads or cookies/squares. This year the lunch will be served at the church and games will follow lunch. Happy Trails Singers will be at Clarington Beech Centre Wednesday, June 9, 7:30 p.m. Refreshments. Canada World Youth is planning a youth exchange in Bowmanvillc July 16 to October 16. Host families are needed as well as help to provide provide resources and activities.
