St. John's News by Colin Beal The Parishioners of St. John's were still reeling from the passing of Helen Green when we learned that Marilyn Clarke's courageous battle with cancer cancer was over. She succumbed on Tuesday, June 8. Marilyn had contributed contributed much to the life of our church. Her organizational skills were outstanding and she contributed greatly greatly to the success of the Hospitality Committee's activities as a planner, leader and a tireless worker. Marilyn was artistic and this flair was evident at St. John's, every Christmas and Easter, in the beautiful decorations which she had designed, made and placed in the church. Marilyn together with iter mother Elma Vaughan were faithful parishioners who travelled from their home in Whitby to St. John's every Sunday....come rain, snow or whatever the weather might throw at them. Only in the few months since Marilyn's sickness was diagnosed diagnosed have they been absent from our congregation. We shall all miss Marilyn's cheerful smile, quick wit and enthusiasm. Our hearts go out to Elma, to her brother Bill and to Terry and Tim, her sons. We pray for them and for Marilyn. Father Hugh officiated officiated at the funeral which was held in Oshawa on Friday last. A large number number of St. John's parishioners joined with many relatives and friends of the family in saying goodbye. We, at St. John's are still in shock at the loss of two very dear friends, but our grief is tempered by the joy we experienced in knowing them and being with them. We were humbled to realize how many lives each of them had touched during their time on this earth, as witnessed by the many, many people from Blackstock and throughout throughout Scugog and surrounding areas, who came to say "Goodbye and Thank you" to Helen and by the large numbers who turned out to pay their respects to Marilyn. The church school year will end on Sunday, June 20, with a picnic lunch' and games after the Sunday service. Preparations are underway for the Patronal Feast of our church which occurs on the Feast of St. John the Baptist, June 24th, but will be celebrated celebrated on Sunday, June 27th. Our Parish, the oldest Christian Community, in The Township of Scugog will be 160 years old on that day.
