The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, June 16, 1999 Page 5 Letters to the Editor Lessons Learned from Election Dear Editor; Here arc some lessons I hope will come out of the Provincial Election of June 3, 1999: 1. A political party that makes promises, keeps the promises and runs on its record, will be rewarded at the polls. 2. A political party without clear policies, or which uses name-calling or which deals in negatives, won't be rewarded at the polls. 3. The NDP will finally have to change its philosophy from Tag Days a Success Dear Peter; Our 5th Annual "Tag Days", on June 3rd, 4th and 5th were a tremendous tremendous success. A total of $8,700.00 was raised in support of Community Care programs. The success of this venture is due. largely to the commitment of close to 200 volunteers, the generosity of our local residents and community. Yours truly, Vi Ashton Co-Chair Tag Days Committee "Let's make the rich pay for everything". 4. The Liberal party will finally have to change its philosophy philosophy from "We'll do everything everything for everybody, but we're not really sure how we'll do it or who will pay for it." 5. After the Government begins to operate with a surplus, surplus, more money will be spent on health and education. 6. Union leaders should consult consult more with their membership, membership, who are more attuned to what the average citizen expects from their government. government. 7. Anti-Harris forces will rc-cducalc their supporters to teach them that intimidation and misinformation aren't part of the political process in Ontario. 8. Those who intimidated the poll clerks on Election Day will be caught and punished. 9. Those who polarized the province will now agree to cooperate cooperate and work for a better Ontario. 10. Teachers will now stop writing letters to the editor complaining about Mike Harris and will come up with some ideas instead! Health - in fact health is priceless. Without health, material possessions, careers and social standing are insignificant. When are you going to get it? Health. For many people they feel health is a last minute investment. Often when an individual realizes I'm a chiropractor when I'm out of the office, they say, "1 haven't needed a chiropractor yet - I'm not in any pain". The reality is that very few people feel problems when the problem first occurs. If you're waiting for pain before your health becomes a priority then you're walking through a mine field without a metal detector - it's very risky. I'm afraid I've seen far too many people who treat their health in the same way they pay their taxes - in a panic and all at the last. The tax man may accept last minute attention but that's where the analogy ends. If you wait until the last minute, your health will already be gone. In most disorders pain does not occur until long after the problem arises. For example heart disease, cancer and osteoarthritis usually don't provoke pain in the beginning stages. Individuals with a strong sense of health-esteem make health a priority. They stay healthy and fit, even with today's fast paced and overloaded schedules, These arc the individuals that experience success in other aspects of life as well. It has been well documented that a healthy nervous system is the key to a healthy body. Chiropractors arc prevention specialists who focus on detecting the earliest warning signs of disease. This early warning sign is vertebral subluxation and it causes direct interference on the nervous system. The nervous system controls every other system of the body. Interference with the nervous system has been shown to cause the vast majority of unwanted health conditions people suffer with every day. It is essential to have a healthy and functional nervous system, without it you cannot express your best health. Are you, or someone you love, always "doing for others" • never wanting to "waste time" caring for your or their self? lit the rush of everyday life, it's all too easy to neglect the truly Important things - like our health. If you are caught up in the frantic pace of today's world, you cannot afford not to have a healthy nervous system, Schedule a chiropractic check up today to ensure good health today and Into the future - you're worth it! To learn more about chiropractic, health and wellness, Dr. Herron provides a health talk every Tuesday night at Herron Family Chiropractic, Bowmanvillc. Where are Fireworks? From page 4 was $2000.00 and it grew to $10,000.00 by the last year we ran this program. This is largely for the cost of the fireworks; they are very expensive. expensive. W c approached the Municipality for help and we were told that they had assisted financially financially in the past and wc had to learn to stand on our own feet. No funds would be forthcoming from them! Wc tried a ' corporate sponsor sponsor but it became a political "hot potato" and in the end, the funds fell short of our needs and we suffered a loss. Wc have the desire, knowledge knowledge and manpower manpower (all help is volunteer) to provide provide this event - wc just don't have the funds! Also, for this program to be successful, planning planning must be started in January at the latest. Capsule Comments with Neale McLean, B.Sc. Phm. We all know of the hazards of overexposure to sunlight. Did you know that if you stay out of the mid-day sun (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), you will avoid 60% of the UVB rays that hit the earth. UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn and are primarily responsible for causing skin cancers. When you are applying a sunscreen, use one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Be sure to apply the sunscreen at least' 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Also wear broad-brimmed hats and long-sleeved shirts for increased protection. And use good sunglasses. There are products on the market called "sun blocks". These products contain titanium dioxide. They used to be white pastes that gave good protection but looked kind of silly. Newer formulations are available now that don't leave a residue. There are some medications that may interact with sunlight causing phototoxic reactions. Examples of these medications include some antihistamines, cardiac drugs, diabetic drugs, arthritis drugs and others. Talk to your pharmacist to see if your medication may cause a problem with sunlight. It's important to be an advocate for your own health. Be an active learner about all health matters including the drugs you take. We can help you with that information.
