Congratulations to Mrs. Sharon Staples who on Wednesday evening June 9, was showered with congratulations congratulations from her students and their parents parents on her retirement of 33 years as teacher, of Lord Elgin Public School, Bowmanvillc. Special guests included her mother, Mrs. Mary Tamblyn, Orono, her brother brother Paul Tamblyn, who also retires from teaching from Acton, Ontario, his wife Doreen from Kingston and brother William and wife from Orono. The guest received lovely gifts and another parly was held at the guest's home. The Happy Trail Singers A very large crowd of folks gathered gathered Wednesday night, June 9, in the Beech Avenue large auditorium in Bowmanvillc, for the delightful musical musical concert by the 40 voice The Happy Trail Singers choir. Directed by Reverend Roy Taylor and his talented wife as pianist, Mrs. Dorothy Taylor. It was an excellent menu of musical items popular, secular and one old timer "Land of Hope and Glory", brought much applause. Interspersed with cute skits, which brought much laughter; especially the old "balloon seller". A more serious item came later in the evening when the Reverend and wife were thanked for their energetic leadership and fun enjoyed by the choir. Mrs. Taylor was presented with a large bouquet of roses and the Reverend an envelope. Orono has become quite famous for sports through the years and now another award winner, Nicole MacDonald, 12 years of age, won her first ever try-out as gymnastics, a Bronze medal in Canadian National! She joins as a member the West family, family, Peter Landers, Orono Orphans and skater Adam Colville. Our sports heroes! Last week, a large standard horse show; this weekend a very interesting dog show. This is a very fun show with all kinds and breeds and the owners are so proud to show them off. And then on the 29th of June, there will be a huge and noisy show of trucks, tractors etc. This is a real crowd pleaser. Twelve ladies of unit #3 U.CW. held their summer meeting as usual, in the form of a delicious picnic, held at the home of Margaret Gunter. A lovely day and the picnic was delicious: sal- Orono News ads, hot and cold, pies, and to top it off, a pretty birthday cake in honor of one of our oldest member's 93rd birthday. Happy Birthday (o Eileen Billings from Strathavcn. A short business period was held and the group decided to complete both church bathrooms by this fall as the project. Margaret was presented with a small gift as hostess and Eileen treated everyone to chocolates. There will be a little rest now until fall. The ladies went all out on Thursday evening, June 10 in Main Hall of Orono United Church, to a large crowd of members and guests. Their event was a Dessert Tea and a special lady from Port Hope with items from "Grandma's Attic". Craft items, cottons, cottons, gifts etc. Sales were excellent. The dessert tables looked delicious! Orono United Church News Church Surveys: At Kirby and Orono there are surveys to be Filled out by both members and adherents. They are to be returned as soon as possible either to your Session members, drop them in the mail or bring them to the office. These surveys arc very valuable in assisting the church to serve you better. A Congregational Meeting for Kirby and Orono will be held Saturday, June 26, 10 a.m. to discuss the results of the surveys. July Sunday services: Please be advised that ALL July Sunday services for both Orono and Kirby congregations congregations will be held at the Lang Memorial Chapel (Orono cemetery) at 10:00 a.m. If the weather is cooperative cooperative we will be holding our services outdoors. Canada World Youth is an international international exchange program which involves young people in the culture and communities of a country other than their own and pairs each Canadian participant with an overseas participant. This summer there is a Canada/Ukraine program centred in Bowmanvillc. The program is looking for host families from mid July to mid October. Hosts are paid $130. per week for each pair. Museum and Archives On Saturday, June 12, a bus full of Bowmanvillc and Orono folks left Bowmanvillc for points out of town. Everyone served coffee and donuts before leaving promptly at 8:30 a.m. First stop tour of Halton County Radial Railway Museum. Founded in 1953, it is Canada's first and Ontario's only, operating electric railway museum. museum. Everyone enjoyed two bus trips on the tracks and then stopped at a really charming old railway station (Brings back old memories to this story, of Pontypool, Manvers Station and Dranoel). Also a gift shop, with lots of railroad memorabilia. At 12 noon, a stop was made at the quaint village of St. Jacobs and lunch time. A grand tour of St. Jacobs Antique Market (three stories high, and just everything to be seen!). This market is also home of Maple Syrup Museum. Next stop, Waterloo County Antique Mall! But not before delicious ice cream and strawberries! Next stop, Waterloo County Antique Warehouse, all one level. Beautiful quilts and a showcase of children's own made quilts. Of course, we saw the excellent well known Mennonite quilts several times in shops and stores of pine hand crafted furniture. It was a grand day and both museums museums co-sponsored this trip and we arc all happy to have been on board! A very hot day, but both bus and all stores were air conditioned. Our U.C.W. had a very successful yard and bake sale on Saturday, June 12th. The pianist was Dorothy Taylor. It was nice to sec Mr. and Mrs. Errol Groves on the weekend. They used to live on Potters Lane and arc now living in Vermont. They were visiting visiting with Clara Page. Enniskillen B.B.Q. and Street.
