Council had received a letter from the Township of Front of Leeds and Lansdownc asking for support of a resolution resolution passed there. The resolution said, "Violence has greatly increased since Bible reading and prayer has been taken out of schools." The township hopes to garner support support from other municipalities before petitioning the federal and provincial government, along with the Minister of Education and local school boards, to have the practice of school prayer reinstated. But at least two members of Durham's council said they felt the resolution is inappropriate. "I can't support something that marginalizes such a large group of society," said Scugog councillor Ken Gadsden. Ironically, Durham Council continues continues to recite the Lord's Prayer before •each meeting. In spite of that, Ajax mayor Steve Parrish was vehement religion and politics should not be linked. "This nation is founded on the idea of separation of church and state," said Parrish. "Every religion that exists in this world exists in this country. What docs it (school prayer) say to all the people in our jurisdiction who celebrate celebrate and practice all kinds of religions, religions, some of which are not of the Christian faith?" "I take offence to a resolution that would directly attach a couple of recent incidents to prayers solving all the problems," added Parrish. Council voted down the endorsement endorsement of the resolution 17-5.
