Lack of Wetlands Contributes to Drought Conditions The spring of '99 has been one of the driest in recent history. history. Lack of rainfall in- Southern Ontario has not only resulted in a slow start to crops for farmers, many rural landowners have also noticed that their wells are already starting to dry up. So why are local water tables decreasing so rapidly during a short-term drought? One answer can be found in wetlands, or more specifically, the lack of wetlands. wetlands. "When people think of wetlands, they most often think of wildlife habitat," says Nick Kinkel of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DU). "While offering prime habitat is certainly important, wetlands wetlands are vital to the health and well being of people as well." Wetlands, the area where water meets the land, can be thought of as living sponges. When rivers run full, wetlands hold the excess water and release it slowly and safely, maintaining ground water lev els and avoiding the extremes th'at cause drought and flooding. flooding. This temporary storage of water also allows. water to evaporate or to seep into the ground, replenishing the water table. A healthy wetland, especially especially a large wetland or wetland wetland complex, keeps spring melt waters on the land and may also contribute to local weather patterns by releasing moisture back into the atmosphere through evaporation. The vegetation in wetlands wetlands has the ability to clean polluted water by removing harmful nitrates and phosphates. That vegetation vegetation also slows the flow of surface water, combating combating the erosive forces of high water levels. Despite increasing awareness about the importance of wetlands, loss continues at a rapid rate. In Southern Ontario more than 80% of wetlands wetlands have been lost due to urbanization and agricultural drainage. At the same time, this increased urbanization has resulted in a larger draw on the water table by households and industry. Ducks Unlimited, through its wetland restoration program, program, works to restore drained wetlands for the benefit of waterfowl, wildlife and people. people. Working in cooperation with landowners, DU provides varying levels of expertise, manpower and financial contributions contributions towards these projects. projects. If you have wetlands on your property there are many things you can do to easily conserve, restore or enhance them. Ducks Unlimited can help. THE SPINAL COLUMN What's more valuable than diamonds and more precious than gold? Health - in fact health is priceless. Without health, material possessions, careers and social standing are insignificant. When are you going to get it? Health. For many people they feel health is a last minute investment. Often when an individual realizes I'm a chiropractor when I'm out of the office, they say, "l haven't needed a chiropractor yet - I'm not in any pain". The reality is that very few people feel problems when the problem first occurs. If you're waiting for pain before your health becomes a priority then you're walking through a mine field without a metal detector - it's very risky. I'm afraid I've seen far too many people who treat their health in the same way they pay their taxes - in a panic and all at the last. The tax man may accept last minute attention but that's where the analogy ends. If you wait until the last minute, your health will already be gone, In most disorders pain does not occur until long after the problem arises. For example heart disease, cancer and osteoarthritis usually don't provoke pain in the beginning stages. Individuals with a strong sense of health-esteem make health a priority. 1 They'sVayheakh'yand fit, even with today's fast paced and overloaded schedules. These are the' individuals that experience success in other aspects of life as well. It has been well documented that a healthy nervous system, is the key to a healthy body. Chiropractors are prevention specialists who focus on detecting the earliest warning signs of disease. This early warning sign is vertebral subluxation and it causes direct interference on the nervous system. The nervous system controls every other system of the body. Interference with the nervous system has been shown to cause the vast majority of unwanted health conditions people suffer with every day. It is essential to have a healthy and functional nervous system, without it you cannot express your best health. Are you, or someone you love, always "doing for others" - never wanting to "waste time" caring for your or their self? In the rush of everyday life, it's all too easy to neglect the truly - important things - like our health. If you are caught up in the frantic pace of today's world, you cannot afford not to have a healthy nervous system. Schedule a chiropractic check up today to ensure good health today and into the future - you're worth it! To learn more about chiropractic, health and wellness, Dr. Herron provides a health talk every Tuesday night at Herron Family Chiropractic, Bowmanville.
