In the following letters, letters, two of the Ukrainian students who will participate in the exchange, describe in their own words, their hopes and dreams for a visit to Canada. My name is Serhiy Gushcha. I am studying studying in the Ostroh Academy at the Foreign Language Department. My father is an engineer on the Nuclear Power Station and my mother is a teacher in the kindergarten. kindergarten. Also I have a sister. She is 12 and studies at school. We are very friendly and good family. I am proud of it. I like sports (all kinds) very much, computer, music and I am very fond of Hollywood films and sport cars. Also, I graduated from the music school and as a result like classical music. So I can play the flute, the guitar, the piano. One more thing, I like most of all in my life is travelling. travelling. And the dream of my life is to travel all around the world. I like animals too and I am not against any pets in the house. What about the place of work in Canada? I prefer something something that will be useful useful for the society, and for me. I am a communicative communicative and an energetic energetic person. And I want something interesting interesting and new for me (for example a kind of business centre, radio or TV company - somewhere where I can communicate with people all the time and get the experience for my future work.) Also I'd like to study the computer programs. The family I'd like to live with should be normal ordinary people people without any behavior behavior problems. Ukraine? Is it in Africa? Then might it be Russia? No, it is the country of Chernobyl. Oh, now you remember. remember. But I don't want you to think in such way. If you come you will see that it's really a beautiful and rich country. Having no possibility to change something, the old people hope for us. To tell the truth, it really obliges us to alter the situation in the country for better. Participating in different different programs, promotes promotes forming of features features of leadership, exposing own abilities, communication and of course English. We'll surely do and achieve something great. To my mind this program is very useful not only for the young people. And that's why everyone everyone should support such program. And now a few words about me. My name is Nataly Pytlak. I'm a student of the law department. In the future I'll be a barrister of nature or a lawyer-psychologist - at least now I dream about it. What about my hobbies - I prefer reading books, listening listening to music and walks to the mountains. Also, I like to communicate with different people and of course, to meet new friends. My parents are teachers, and they are very clever and kind. My brother is a student of the computer system department of Temopil Academy. He is 18. Serhiy (my brother) is a very smart and funny guy. My family lives in Truskavcts - it's a health resort town. And I can see from my window the Carpathian mountains. n mug f & J V I / r Ï ; U jÊÉÎ' . i I 1 " ' Wmt ' . . * •> A Helping Hand Lakcridge Health Bowmanville's Chaplaincy Program received a helping hand last week from the Salvation Army of Bowmanvillc. Emergency Procedures Pradiœd by Local Radio Çjub For the last seven years a local Amateur Radio group has been competing competing in a North American competition called "Field Day". The competition is 24 hours in length during the fourth weekend in June, from 2:00 p.m. Saturday to 2:00 p.m. Sunday. The reason for the competition is to let the Amateur Radio community practice practice emergency measures. Emergency antennas must be hoisted and there should be as little dependency on normal household power as possible. The Durham Region QRP Group (QRP means low power) consists of only a dozen or so members, mostly from the Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Tyrone area. Starting in 1993 with a fourth place finish in Canada, this group, operating from just a little south east of Tyrone, has earned two more first place finishes and three second place finishes in the Canadian section (over one hundred groups enter from Canada). Running from 12 volt batteries, and transmitting with no more than five watts per station, this small group uses mostly morse code to make as many world wide contacts as possible. Results are then sent to ARRL headquarters in the USA. (American Radio Relay League). During real emergency conditions such as natural disasters and political strife, "ham" operators have provided countless news headlines and life saving reports when normal communications have collapsed.
