Multiple Sclerosis Society ol Canada T-To7)~2 8.-7582 Insurance Pooling Goes Ahead by Jennifer Stone Staff Writer Durham Region will take the plunge into insurance pooling after all. In June of last year, Regional Council asked staff to look into the idea of the eight area municipalities going together to buy the insurance each is required to carry. Treasurers from the Region and several area municipalities municipalities had looked into the plan with the help of consultant consultant Dion Durrcll and Associates and gave the plan the nod. The study said pooling could result in a savings savings of up to $4 million to be realized over three years. But, until last Monday, it appeared the plan would not go ahead. Oshawa had indicated it was not interested in pooling in January. Then, Pickering and Whitby had begged out of the plan in June, saying the two towns could realize larger savings by going it alone. Without the premium dollars from those three municipalities, Regional staff considered the pooling pooling plan neither viable nor economical. But the plan got an eleventh-hour reprieve earlier earlier in the week, when Whitby's council had a change of heart. "It was a staff recommendation that we not go along," said Whitby Councillor Joe Drumm after Wednesday's Regional Council meeting. "Council decided otherwise." "It's an excellent move, something we won't regret," he added, saying he feels it's necessary for the Region to prove to the province that the eight Durham municipalities can work together. "The more we do together as a Region, the better better chance we have of surviving whatever the province has in store," he said, alluding to amalgamation amalgamation fears regions have had since the Welfare Caseload Continues to Decline Community and Social Services Minister John Baird announced June 21 that more than 7,300 people people stopped relying on welfare in May as a result of the government's economic reforms and mandatory work for welfare program. "Since June 1995 when we were first elected, our welfare reforms have helped more than 387,000 people get off welfare," said Baird. "Now, we have been given a mandate to continue building on this success. This means taxpayers will continue to save money and people on welfare will continue to get the opportunities they need to become self-sufficient." self-sufficient." In May, 284,228 cases, representing 628,483 people, received welfare assistance. This includes the single parent caseload that is being transferred from the old Family Benefits program to Ontario Works, the government's mandatory work for welfare welfare program. Car Wash Will Assist AIDS Committee The AIDS Committee of Durham is holding their Second Annual Fund-raising Car Wash. The event is taking place on Saturday, July 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Speedy Muffler at 1080 Simcoe St. N. in Oshawa has been so kind as to donate the use of their parking lot to have the car wash. So, come on out and support the AIDS Committee of Durham by having your car washed on July 17th. province amalgamated the municipalities in Toronto a few years ago. While Oshawa and Pickering still will not participate, participate, Clarington, Uxbridge, Brock, Whitby, Scugog and Ajax will get together on insurance coverage purchased purchased under one common policy. Regional staff will work with the local municipalities and the insurance company to come up with a deal. Council will be expected to approve a package by December. The insurance package is targeted to take effect March 1,2000 for a three-year period. CLIP sTsAVeToUPONTCUpT SAvTcOUPOnTI BROKEN WINDSHIELD?
