Although there have been repeated assurances assurances from Durham's Health Department indicating indicating there is no significant health threat resulting from the private septic systems currently in use, Regional staff have been told to move forward with an environmental environmental study on the current sewer situation. Clarington Councillor John Mutton has been after the Region for months to look at the problem. problem. There have been 16 sewage disposal complaints complaints from Orono residents since 1996. Seven of the complaints remain under review. And, 600 residents of Orono have signed a petition asking the Durham Region for an environmental environmental review. "Six hundred people who live in Orono have signed a petition," petition," said Oshawa councillor councillor Brian Nicholson at Wednesday's regional meeting. "If Orono has less than 2,000 people, people, the petition represents more than 30 percent. I think we have a moral responsibility responsibility to step in." Cathy Clarke, another Oshawa councillor, agreed. "We should be addressing the issue because there is a perception perception in the community community (that something is wrong). This problem has been on-going for a long, long time," she said. The last study done on the situation situation in 1990 concluded concluded that "during "during periods of rainfall and/or high ground water base flow, the surface waters throughout the downtown (of Orono) approximate approximate raw sewage." Ken Thompson, Regional Director of Environmental Services, said the "purpose (of the new study) is to get a better handle handle on what the true situation is." In the earlier study, "the level of detail was not broad enough to satisfy the Ministry of Health that it is not a communitywide communitywide problem," said Thompson. He told council council the study would include an examination of individual properties properties using septic systems. The study will also look at the possibility possibility of extending extending the life of the current system or, in and if that fails, deciding on alternatives. alternatives. "The study will see if the problem is of a larger scale of magnitude than we expect. It will also include in- stream testing of the Wilmot Creek," said Thompson, adding similar • studies have recently been completed Brooklin Uxbridge. Over the summer, summer, the Region will look at terms of reference for the study. After deciding those, the Region will call for Requests for Proposal, in which various companies can bid to do the required work. "We will then come back to council before making any expenditures," said Thompson approve the expenditure sometime this fall. DUNN'S Tailors - Oshawa Centre A SIZE FOR EVERY MAN E3 EE! Council is expected to Electrifying Fish in Bowmanville The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) Aquatic Resource Technicians arc zapping local waterways to investigate Fish communities communities in the Bowmanvillc/Sopcr Creek Watershed. Electrofishing is one of the data collection techniques completed at each of the sites. It involves the use of a backpack unit that emits an electric current into the water, The electrical shock stuns fish long enough for them to be netted and placed in a special storage unit. The shock is not harmful to the fish, and the storage reduces the level of stress experienced experienced by the fish. The fish revive in a lew sec onds and then are grouped according to species, measured, counted and released. This is the second year of a two-year program program where Authority staff arc studying 55 sites to gather data for the Bowmanvillc/Soper Creek Watershed Aquatic Resources Management Plan (ARMP). ' "The ARMP is being developed to ensure that measures arc being taken to maintain a healthy and sustainable fish community in the Bowmanville and Soper Creek watersheds," says Jill McColl, manager of Resources Policy and Planning at CLOCA. CLOCA is working in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the Department àf Fisheries and Oceans, Canada, to complete the management plan by spring of 2000. The Conservation Authority would like to encourage the public to participate in the development development of the ARMP.
