Page 6 The Clarington/Courticc Independent, Bowmanville, Friday, July 2, 1999 Unified Currency Issue Driven by the Media Should we forget about the loonic and just start using the U.S. greenback? A harmonized currency is the question the media has recently been preoccupied preoccupied with. It's ludicrous, made even more so, since it's taking place during Canada Week. How did it all start? Well the C.D. Howe Institute published a study suggesting we seek a common currency with the U.S. Suddenly, the media starts chasing chasing its tail and becomes so dizzy it thinks this is all cabinet ministers have on the agenda for their meeting this week. I can only conclude the media was suffering from a dull news day. Others suggest the cabinet meeting, since it's looking at Canada's relationship with the U.S., has an agenda bent on eroding our sovereignty. Nothing could be further from the truth. The government is aware of the increase in the number of Canadian businesses being taken over by Americans. We know, despite our best efforts, that our trade is increasing increasing tied to trade with the U.S. Cabinet is looking at these issues with an eye toward ensuring our country's integrity remains intact. There are two arguments attached to the harmonized currency currency issue. One is economic Pari iamentary Report by Alex Shepherd K Rl s - 'ÿJÛÊl ÆtÊ and the other is cultural. On strictly economic terms to harmonize our currency when Canada's economy is only 10 per cent of the U.S. would simply mean adopting the U.S. dollar. Interest-rate policy and macroeconomic policy policy would be set in Washington. ' Some will argue this happens happens anyway. But in fact the Bank of Canada has set its own interest rates. For example, whenever I have spoken with Bank of Canada governor Gordon Theissen, he has always affirmed the need for an independent independent monetary policy. And, while Canada's economy economy is shifting to more manufacturing manufacturing and service sectors and away from the resource sector, Canada still has a significant portion related to resources. The shock of the South-East Asian crisis would have been much worse on Canada had not the Bank of Canada been able to pursue an independent economic economic policy. On the cultural front, if we wanted to copy everything the U.S. did, then we would simply be Americans. There is such a great symbolic symbolic presence to having our own currency. We should never discount the importance of symbols. When Canadians buy goods and services, they are all using the loonie. This, in itself, is unifying. I know some of you reading this will disagree with me, but the only irony I see with our currency is that, on one side of it we affirm our sovereignty by simply having Canada written on it. The reverse, however, has a picture of a sovereign from a foreign country. Why? Perhaps that's the question we should be asking ourselves during Canada Week, instead of preoccupying ourselves ourselves with some outlandish media driven issue. Helping Out A May Walk-a-thon held by students, parents and staff at Dr. Ross Tilley School managed to raise $1,350, and the students decided to use the money to help out two very worthy causes -- the Memorial Hospital Foundation, Bowmanville, and refugees from Kosovo. The Hospital Mascot, played by Drew Adams, Mary Fletcher of the Hospital Board, teachers Carroll Farrow and Linda Cole, and Bert Callaghan of the Red Cross were on hand for the cheque presentation. County Orange Parade in Blackstock On July 12th at 7:00 p.m. the County Orange Lodge of West Durham will commemorate the 309th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne with a Parade and Heritage Celebration in the Village of Blackstock. Lodges will come from Brampton, Eglinton, Port Perry, Victoria, Kendal, Tyrone and Purple Hill. Food and refreshments will be available at the Fair Grounds before and after the Parade. A social hour with band demonstrations will be held in the arena after the parade. The County Orange Lodge wishes to invite the Citizens of the Durham Region and the Public at large to join with us. P.S. Yes "King Billy" will ride again on his white horse. This role will be played by Bro. Neil Tagart of L.O.L. 399 Purple Hill. Pop Tab Collection Worth $700 Students at Dr. Ross Tilley Elementary School in Bowmanville estimate that their collection of aluminum pop can tabs will fetch $700 this year. The money from the recycled aluminum is used in a program that raises funds for wheelchairs. Grade eight students Harmony Readc, Nick O'Donohue, Ashley Crichton, Chris P.J. and Siobhan Wippel are shown above with some of the boxes of pop tabs. They were collected by all students at the school, with help from many members of the community who also began their own collections and dropped them off at the school. Preston Transport will take the tabs away for recycling. ✓ WILD WILD WEST (PG) Fri-Thurs: 12:45,1:25,3:15,4:05,7:0), 7:30,9:30,9:55 (ON 2 SCREEDS) SH0WTIMES FOR THE WEEK OF FRIDAY, JULY 2 TO THURSDAY JULY 8 SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT (AA) Fri-Thurs: 12:30,2:30,4:35,7:40,9:50 ✓ STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE (PG) Frt-Dm: 1:15,2:05,4:10,5:00,7:05, 8:05,9:50 (ON 2 SCREENS « NO PASSES) ✓ THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER (AA) Fri-Thur»: 1:40,4:15,7:20,10:05 ✓ TARZAN (F) FrVThurs: 12:00,2,'OQ, 4:00,6:00,8:00 ✓ BIG DADDY (AA) Frt-Thur»: 12:00,12:50,2:15,3:00,4:35, 5:15,7:10,7:35,925,10:00 (ON 2 SCREENS) SUMMER OF SAM (H) Frt-Tb-jrs: 12:40,3:45,6:45, i :45 ✓ AUSTIN POWERS 2: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME (PG) Frf-Thurs: 12:05,220,4:30,7:25,9:40 (PLEASE NOTE: NO 725 SHOW ON MONDAY) ✓ AMERICAN PIE (AA) SNEAK PREVIEW MONDAY 7:30 ' (STAY AS OUR GUEST FOR "AUSTIN POWERS") Mtr Will SMITH KEVIN KLINE •Jims win 'mine» mm WILD WILD WEST ■WL.. •{ - rumi 59WW y CUIMH Literacy Camp Seeks Volunteers ENORMOUSLY ENTERTAINING!' This year, the camp will run from July 19 - July 30 and Durham East 4-H Rabbit Club On June 14, the rabbit club members held their third meeting at the Metcalf's rabbitry. Our roll call was to name one reason why people raise rabbits. At the meeting we reviewed what to look for when judging a rabbit. We learned 19 steps to help you when your rabbit is being judged. The steps such as checking their cars and eyes help ensure that you also have a healthy rabbit. After discussing this, we judged a class of Holland Laps. L.T. Harris offered his reasons lor how lie placed the class. We then headed outside the rabbitry and had members dress up as people who all raise rabbits for different reasons. Kevin Connelly pretended to he Joe who raised his rabbits to supply a pet store. Carissa Sharpe acted as Sara, who raised her rabbits for yarn, L.T. Harris and Jenny Cartwright dressed up as Larry and Diane who raised their rabbits for meat. Jtmellc Kellogg pretended to lie Paula who raised her rabbits for show. To wrap up the meeting, we had a relay game reviewing everything we have learned so far in the club. We then enjoyed refreshments and said goodbye. August 3 to August 13, at a cost of $5.00 per child for a two week period. The camp this summer, will be held at Mary Street Community School in Oshawa. If you are able to volunteer with our organization, or would like to make a donation, Canadian Children's Literacy Association, can be reached at 743- 0887 or 922 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa, LIG 4W2. CHIROPRACTIC: YOUR FIRST CHOICE Chiropractic goes to the source of migraines to stop them before they start. Migraines have been linked to a spinal problem called vertebral subluxation. Vertebral subluxations are areas in the spine that have shifted and put pressure on the sensitive spinal nerves and spinal cord. One study showed that 84% of subjects with migraines or tension type headaches had at least two subluxations in their upper neck. Chiropractic combats another source of migraines - a misaligned neck. Desk work and slumped shoulders can lead to a straightening or a reversal of the neck's natural curve, which is a major risk factor for neck and head pain and is significantly associated with migraines (JMPT 1992;15:418-29). Specific chiropractic adjustments help to regain and maintain the neck's natural curve and prevent migraine headaches. WHY VISIT THE CHIROPRACTOR WHEN YOU CAN 1UST POP A PILL? Although the most common reaction to a headache is to run to the medicine cabinet, visiting your chiropractor is safer, effective and greatly increases your chances of averting future migraine episodes! Many migraine drugs work by constricting the arteries. A pill doesn't have a brain and it will affect all the arteries, not just the arteries to the head. Do you know what happens if the arteries to the heart are constricted? It's called cardiac ischemia - a heart attack. Wow - that's a really effective way to never have another headache! The list of over the counter drugs of the 90's are the prescription drugs of the 80's. Don't fool yourself into thinking they're any safer. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH . Migraines have a destructive effect on your life and the lives of those around you. The work mate that must work that extra day because you're not in because of a headache, your kids who have to keep quiet while you "drug up and sleep it off' in a dark room and the family that misses you at family outings and picnics - all these people deserve better and so do you.
