Local Avon Reps Help Raise $4.3 Million For Cancer Research Blackstock News Big Thunderstorm Hits Saturday Tractor Pull Avon dealers in District 309 from the Clarington area arc winners. These hard working sales dealers, represented by their manager, Mrs. Grace King, were recognized as, one of the top 5 districts in Canada (the other 4 arc all front Newfoundland). This recognition was for their success in raising awareness and funds in the Avon Flame Crusade against Breast Cancer. District 309 is made up of 440 sales dealers that cover the area of Clarington, parts of Scugog and Hope Twps. and the southern half of Victoria County. Avon Sales Dealers have spearheaded spearheaded six fundraising campaigns, selling over two million Flame Pins, Pens and Key Chains. This past year they arc selling the Avon Flame Mug for $4.00. (all taxes included). Beginning in September 1999, the Avon Flame Crusade new fundraising item will be the Golden Flame Pen Pendant for sale at $5, all taxes included. included. All profits from the sales go to breast cancer research, education, treatment, prevention and awareness. Avon is the largest corporate contributor contributor to the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative (CBCRI), supporting supporting more than 115 research projects led by Canada's top cancer specialists. The Avon Canada Flame Crusade Against Breast Cancer has raised $4.3 million for.Breast Cancer - a few dollars dollars at a time. by Joyce Kelly The annual Tractor and Truck Pull was an excellent success on Friday evening with fine weather and great competition. However, on Saturday, problems plagued the event - first a breakdown of the sled caused a delay (which actually gave Dinky the Clown a great opportunity to display his most unusual car in fine fashion) and then the pull had to be closed before its conclusion due to a severe thunderstorm, thunderstorm, wet track conditions and lack of electricity. But many excellent pulls were made in spite of the difficulties. The results arc listed. Next Monday evening, July 12 an event that has not been here in Blackstock for many, many years will be held - namely the July 12 parade. It will form up at the arena and fair grounds and will begin at 7:00 p.m. I am sure many visitors will be in town for this parade. On Sunday afternoon, a "Come and Go Tea" was held in honour of Annie Taylor on the occasion of her 80th birthday at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Cathy Taylor and family. A large crowd of relatives, neighbours and friends on the spacious lawn for the happy event. She received congratulatory plaques from the Prime Minister and others, many cards and gifts. A lovely tea including of course birthday cake was served. Many happy returns to you, Annie. Members of the Blackstock Agricultural Society are reminded of the July meeting which will be held at the Town Hall on Thursday evening, July 15. Please mark your calendars now. I hope that you have noticed the beautiful new flower boxes at the entrance of the Recreation Centre. These boxes are a project for the "International Year of Older People" and were built by a group of young people under the guidance of Fred Ford. The plants were provided by Turner's Greenhouse and were planted by members of the Garden Club - Cliff Lockyer, Angela Willis, Ria Hoogeveen and Marliese Hassler. Thanks to all of the participants.
