The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, July 28,1999 Page 14 S.W.I.M. Program Brings Teen Volunteers to Town They come from four very different regions of the United States, but their goal is the same. They arrived at Bowmanvillc this summer to learn and to volunteer at the Maranatha Christian Reformed Church, Jen Hoeksema, of Florida; Andrea Dykstra, from Iowa; Theresa Fondse, of Washington State and Sara TerBeek, from Michigan are completing three and a half weeks of service through the S.W.I.M (Student Workshop in Ministry) program. The high school students -- all 16 years of age or older -- ' worked at the Maranatha SonCastle Faire Vacation Bible School last week, where about 85 youngsters enjoyed Bible- focused songs, stories, games, crafts and skits based on a medieval theme. The S.W.I.M. group also Visual Arts Centre Hosts Adult Workshops Summer is for adults too, and the Visual Arts Centre has several mini- courses which run summer evenings. Register at (905) 623-5831. The courses available are as follows: Encaustic Painting July 20- 22 6:30-9:30 with Orono artist Tony Cooper. Fresco Painting August 24- 26,6:30-9:30 with Orono artist Tony Cooper. Students will make their own frescoes from tiles to larger panels using watercolour on fresh white cement. Garden pottery August 10- 12, 6:30-9:30 and then Aug 30 at 6:30 for glazing with Barbara Kimball. Students will explore a range of pottery techniques techniques and make functional and decorative pieces such as birdbaths, wind chimes, or garden garden sculpture. Theatre Arts Award Jane Vatcher (right), Vice President of the Bowmanvillc Drama Club, presents the Bowmanvillc Drama Club Award to Durham Christian High School graduate Jordan Hoogendam (left) for his outstanding contribution to the theatre arts program at his school. The Bowmanvillc Drama Club Award is given to one graduating student from each of the five local high schools annually. prepared for the vacation bible school program and completed some evangelism courses during the first part of their stay in Bowmanvillc. They also conducted a door-to-door survey that will help the church collect data to be used in planning community outreach programs in the future. Working at St. Vincent's Kitchen in Oshawa and leading a service at the Whitby Mental Health Centre were also among their tasks while in Bowmanvillc. But the trip was not without without its lighter moments. The group has enjoyed camping out and local sightseeing trips that included a visit to the Parkwood estate in Oshawa. They'll also be going to Niagara and Toronto for more sightseeing. sightseeing. And, in Toronto, they'll also be handing out food for the homeless. "Friends said it was a good spiritual experience for them," said Jen Hoeksema, in describing why she joined the S.W.I.M. program this summer. The Bowmanvillc foursome are among 140 students who are participating in projects across North America. - Since she comes from a large city, Jen Hoeksema experienced some "culture shock" living in a smaller Canadian municipality. However, Theresa, Andrea and Sara are all from smaller smaller centres and therefore have not found a big difference difference between life in Bowmanvillc and life in their hometown. They have, however, noticed some things about Canada that are definitely unique. For instance, there's five-pin bowling. (The U.S. has only the ten-pin game.) Labels on many products in Canadian stores are different different from the U.S. labels. And then there's the Canadian habit of selling milk in plastic bags. The U.S. visitors had never seen such a thing. The group also spent a lot of time with local young people at Maranatha. And they've found the experience experience to be worthwhile. "We've all had a lot of fun together. We clicked right away," said Theresa Fondse. PORT HOPE FESTIVAL THEATRE Series Sponsored by Cameco "Oiscom ol Professional YneaUe \n V \cXuv esque Por X.
