Last fall, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) published Ontario's first, system-wide hospital report. Commissioned by the OHA and with research conducted conducted by the University of Toronto, Hospital Report '98 is the most comprehensive report on the performance of Canadian hospitals lo date. The report developed core measures in four categories: measures of clinical utilization utilization and outcomes, patient perceptions of Ontario hospitals, hospitals, measures of financial performance and condition, and system integration and change. Building on last year's success, Hospital Report '99 has been expanded to include hospital-specific data along with the province's first standardized patient satisfaction satisfaction survey. Over ninety hospital corporations representing over 120 hospital sites, (approximately 95 per cent of acute care in Ontario) have signed up for the voluntary project. The results of the survey will be analyzed by University of Toronto researchers and will be released in a public report slated for the end of 1999. OHA President and CEO David MacKinnon noted that the development of the Hospital Report is an extremely intricate and complex undertaking. "The purpose purpose for initiating these public reports is to continuously improve the quality of care in the hospital system, by enabling and encouraging hospitals to learn from each other." Mr. MacKinnon added, "Another important goal of Hospital Report '99 is to demonstrate to the citizens of Ontario that hospitals are committed to public accountability."
