Award Winning Video The recent shooting of a Toronto police officer and the violent death of another in Sudbury, are bitter reminders that those who work in law enforcement constantly constantly put themselves in harm's way to protect our communities. These horrific incidents also illustrate that there is no such thing as a "routine call". When an officer becomes the victim, through personal personal injury or death, or from witnessing multiple trauma trauma situations in the line of duty, family members, friends and co-workers may also be traumatized. And while physical injuries often heal with time, the emotional emotional scars, if not properly dealt with, will only fester. Trauma Management Training Service Ltd., (TMTS), a unique subsidiary company of The Co-operators, Co-operators, has produced a 25 minute training video designed specifically for those who work in law enforcement. Only recently released, "Officer Down" Workplace Violence Training for Law Enforcement Officers is receiving rave reviews from the field and has already garnered one international award. Marc Couiombe, a 10 year veteran with the RCMP, currently stationed in Fort Providence NWT, calls the video "powerful, packed full of emotion and personal experience...a must see for all police officers, no matter how many years of experience the have on the street." Dedicated to education individuals and workplaces about trauma, TMTS strongly believes in the benefits of proactive training. In fact, their motto is "We're there before you need us". TMTS also provides reactive response, which involves helping victims live with the trauma they have already experienced. "Most people don't know how to support someone in crisis and, likewise, we don't know how to ask for help when we need it ourselves," says Donna Tona, a Certified Trauma Specialist (C.T.S.) and Director of Education and Crisis Intervention for TMTS. TMTS believes, and has proven over and over again, that those who are prepared for the possibility of trauma know now to support each other, and they know how to self-manage until emotional first-aid arrives. This knowledge helps to foster a healthier attitude and provides provides personal stability during a crisis. When people have the training, they get better faster, the healing is more complete, victims get back to work sooner, and they are productive more quickly. Having experienced many disasters first-hand, TMTS was on-site, following the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, and assisted victims of Canada's Red River, Manitoba floods in 1997, and Ice Storm '98 in Eastern Canada. Aside from large-scale disasters, TMTS has spent many hours on the frontlines listening to first-hand accounts of police officers and members of numerous RCMP detachments. "We felt privileged to help guide them through their trauma in an informal and confidential manner," Tona adds. Bike Helmet Safety Proper Fit and Comfort Keys To Bike Helment Safety One of the pioneers in helmet safety standards wants to remind cyclists to obey the rules of the road and to remember remember to always wear a certified helmet when cycling. Research shows that wearing a certified certified bike helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury by up to 85 per cent. Cyclists without helmets are almost three times more likely to suffer serious head injuries in crashed than those wearing a helmet. Helmets can save lives. CSA International published its first standard for bike helmets in 1990 and subsequently published the first North American standard covering helmets for children under age five in 1996. CSA International offers the following tips to make choosing and using your bicycle helmet easier: • Helmets should bear the manufacturer's manufacturer's identification, model number, size or size range, CSA certification mark and a permanent warning on the exterior of the helmet about the limits of protection the helmet offers. • For children under five, look for a permanent yellow CSA mark or label indicating the helmet has been specially designed for children. • Helmets must be labeled with instructions on how to ensure proper fit • Select a helmet that fits snugly and is comfortable • Check for stability - the helmet should not move or come off when the straps and comfort pads are adjusted • Look for air vents that allow heat to escape, providing coolness and perspiration perspiration control • Front and rear straps should meet just below each car when tightly. adjustèd. Chin straps should be snug without pinching • Avoid wearing or using a helmet with cracks-or dents, which may decrease its effectiveness • Replace a helmet if it has been involved in a crash • Look for brightly colored helmets with reflective strips • Avoid dark-coloured helmets which arc difficult for motorists to see at night For more information about CSA International, visit our web site at www.csa-intcrnational.org. The Story of Ben and Jerry How many successful businesses begin almost by accident, usually started by people with a passion for their product ? That's the way it happened with a couple of guys in Vermont-who are now known to millions millions of people simply as Ben & Jerry, makers of "euphoric" ice cream! As with many entrepreneurial endeavors, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield had their share of start-up problems, Shortly after finishing finishing respective educations, and experiencing fits and starts in other careers, the two best friends decided that if they had to work, then they wanted to work together without having to work for anyone else. And they wanted to have fun, too. But what to do ? Their joint passion was eating - so first they thought about opening a restaurant. However, the cost of startup equipment, even second hand, was way beyond their very limited limited budget. It finally came down to bagels or ice cream - as the machinery needed for ice cream was cheaper than bagels, the decision was made, Ben and Jerry were in the ice cream business - with an investment of $12,000 (OK, that was worth more in 1978 than in 1999 !). So that winter, there they were fixing up an abandoned gas station as their first store (the , rent was low !), and learning to make ice cream via a $5 correspondence course from Penn State. During their first summer in Burlington, Vermont, they had a lot of fun - and found that people not only loved their ice cream hut were even happy to line up for it, They also found that one of the best ways to promote their product was to give it away at events and célébrations. And they have continued continued to do this, in creative ways that help charities charities and communities. By 1982, they both decided that they'd had enough of the business, and put the company up for sale, It was during the negotiation process that Cohen and Greenfield finally focussed on exactly what kind of business they wanted to run. It was: to see whether a business business could thrive while being a force for progressive progressive social change. The sale never took place -and the rest, as they say, is history. . During that history, they got plenty of on- the-job training, working as renovators, chefs, flavour inventors, delivery persons, line workers, workers, manufacturer overseers, salesmen. Now, twenty years later, they have a company they're proud of, along with a corporate mission mission that identifies them as a "valucs-lcd business". business". Interpreted as a responsibility to integrate socially beneficial actions into the company's day-to-day activities, at Ben & Jerry's not only arc workplace standards important, but so also are community outreach programs and participation. participation. Tills mandate is continuing in Canada, as Delicious Alternative Deserts (D.A.D.), under license with Ben & Jerry's, supports a number of not-for-profit groups across the country, from the "Learning with Dragons Education Initiative" in Vancouver lo "Blues in tiro Schools" in Ottawa, as well as the Children's Aid Foundation in Ontario. 1 Cohen and Greenfield believe strongly that profitability and social responsibility go together as well as 'vanilla and chocolate'. If you give to a community it will come back to you; and the proof is in their success. Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc. is now an international corporation selling frozen desserts around the world, whose 1998 revenue revenue was $209 million (US). The I'lavopr names -such ns Chunky Monkey(r) and Cherry Gnrcln(r) - are not only unique and therefore memorable, but also reflect their work slogan: "if it's not fun, why do it?"
