( Page 12 The Clarington/Courticc Independent, Bowmanvillc, Friday, August 13,1999 Bowmanville Couple Celebrates 70 Years of Marriage By Jennifer Stone Staff Writer When the Finney family gathers in Solina tomorrow, the guests will span in age from . two to almost 92. The family will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of Bowmanvillc residents Phil and Gladys Finney, Most of their family - which includes seven children, 21 grandchildren, grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and two great- great-grandchildren - will gather at Solina Hall to mark the milestone. Mr. Finney, who turns 92 next month, and his wife, who is approaching 90, dated for "quite a while" before marrying on Aug. 17, 1929, remembers Mrs. Finney. "I met him on a boat to Niagara, on a General Motors trip," she recalls. Mrs. Finney, who arrived in Canada from England when she was nine, worked in the radiator plant at GM for about five years before starting their family. Peterborough- bred Mr. Finney retired from the Osliawa plant after about four decades of service. The couple married in Oshawa, where they lived for about a year before moving to the Finney farm in Maple Grove, which they sold in the late 1970s. There, they began their family. family. The first five children were born within seven years; another came along eight years later; and the couple's last child was born five years after that. Though the couple married just months before the beginning of the Great Depression of the 1930s, their children didn't suffer. "They always got plenty to eat," says Mrs. Finney. "Eggs paid our bills, and chickens." ' Her daughter Theresa Farrow agrees. "Even though we didn't have a lot of money, we had exceptionally happy childhoods," childhoods," she says. The family has remained close. Saturday's celebration in Solina will bring close to 100 family members together. Five of the Finney's children still live nearby, but others will arrive from New Brunswick and Illinois. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren are spread across North America. Members of the Finney's immediate family family have inherited at least one trait from their parents. Between the seven children, and Mr. and Mrs. Finney, their marriages total 358 years. "All of us are still married to the same people people as we started with," says Mrs. Farrow. Mr. and Mrs. Finney were named 'Clarington's Oldest Sweethearts' in a February 1998 edition of the Canadian Statesman, a title they're both proud of. Asked the secret to their marriage success, Mr. Finney says with a laugh, "I don't know." But Mrs. Finney says she's pretty clear on why they've been together for seven decades. "We just love each other. It's give and take," she explains. Commissioner of Works DURHAM THE SPINAL COLUMN OPTIMAL SPINE = OPTIMAL HEALTH An estimated 44 million people in North America experience signs of jaw dysfunction. It's not surprising considering that your jaw is constantly at work swallowing, talking and eating. In fact, the average person swallows more than 2000 times per day! Read on to learn more about jaw disorders and how to find the solution to jaw pain that you've keen searching for! Tire large hinge joints that open and close the mouth when you talk or cat are referred to as the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). Problems arise in that may involve one or more of the following structures: 1. The hones that make up the jaw joint, 2. The nerves that supply areas around the jaw and 3. The muscles of the jaw, face, head or neck. TMJ dysfunction usually develops gradually. Anything that upsets the normal position or alignment of the jaw can predispose you to jaw disorder. For example, many people develop TMJ after being involved in a motor vehicle accident. The sudden movement of the head, back and forth, often force the TMJ bones out of their natural alignment. Many times TMJ is frequently misdiagnosed because the symptoms often lead doctors to suspect other, seemingly unrelated, disorders. For example. TMJ may masquerade as tension or migraine headaches, ear ache, neck pain or other "mysterious" ailments. Where can you go for help on locking this jaw "mystery"! Chiropractors are experts at detecting TMJ dysfunction. Your chiropractor will draw connections between your symptoms to unearth hidden causes of pain, including TMJ. Tlte chiropractic approach to health care - which recognizes the body as a coherent unit, with complex connections and interdependencies - is extremely important in detecting ami treating TMJ dysfunction. Why! Because the bones, muscles and nerves in your jaw head and neck are all connected. Together they function in an intricate dance. When one aspect of this complex dance is "off', the harmony of the dance is disrupted, and the rest of the structures are affected. In TMJ dysfunction, this occurs when the jaw joint is out of alignment, when nerves in the area ate interfered with or when the muscles in the area not working properly. Research Indicates that this phenomenon may also take place when there is a misalignment is your spine or neck, leading to TMJ dysfunction (JMPT 1982; 5(2): 79-81). Scientific studies also support the use of chiropractic for the correction of TMJ dysfunction (JMl'T 1995; 18(2): 98-104). Depending on your unique biomechanics, you're chiropractor may work on your jaw joint directly, your neck or both. Doctors of chiropractic used gentle maneuvers called chiropractic adjustments to restore alignment to these misaligned areas, or vertebral subluxations, and prevent them from reoccurring. And, the beauty of chiropractic is that Its "all natural", so there's no need to take drugs with potentially harmful side- effects. If your TMJ is aggravated by an uneven bite or orthodontic work, your chiropractor may choose to eo-manage your condition with a dentist or otthudnntist who specializes in TMJ dysfunction. Your dental professional may recommend preventative orthodontic procedures that will prevent future misalignment and insure that your chiropractic adjustments slay In place. Good jaw health Is essential for children. F.xperts believe that TMJ dysfunction In youngsters may cause headaches, throat infection, car Infections, sinus infections and asthma (Cranio 1990; 8(4): 342-9). Which makes sense, when you understand the nervous system controls all these areas, and with problems stemming from the nerves, many conditions, like TMJ dysfunction, may arise. TMJ dysfunction is common In young people for example, one recent study determined that 16.7% of preschoolers had symptoms of TMJ dysfunction (Cranio 1990; 17:1). I low can you tell If your child has TMJ dysfunction! Clicking sounds In the jaw are often a warning sign, although jaw problems may be present without symptoms.
