The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 25,1999 Page 9 Where are they now? Former Oriole Player Pitching Near Boston A former Bowmanville resident has been dubbed the 'gift from the Great White North' after leading his high school baseball team to a superb season. George Scharrenweber, who played in the Glaring- ton Orioles minor baseball system, had a stellar season season pitching for the Newburyport Clippers high school varsity team near Boston, Mass., this past season. season. The right-hander and co-captain posted a 9-0 record with a LOI ERA and 68 strikeouts in only 69 innings of work. His career record at the school was 13-2, and he ranks 17th on the school's all-time win list. A senior at the school, he was the focus of à full- length feature article in 'The Daily News' newspaper in early June. Scharrenweber plans to attend Massachusetts Maritime Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay in the fall where he plans to study Marine Engineering and continue his baseball career. Rattlesnakes and soccer in the heart of Texas Mosquito Orioles tied with Peterborough Home-field advantage seemed to count for very little as the Clarington Oriole Mosquito baseball club began their best-of-seven playoff series with the Peterborough Tigers last weekend.. On Friday night in Bowmanville, the Oriole bats came up flat as Peterborough pitching rang up 11 strikeouts. The Oriole's destiny was determined early as they were unable to cash in a single run during a bases-loaded, no-out situation situation in the first inning. Although leading 3-2 after four innings, a four-run fifth inning by the Tigers helped guide them to an 8-3 victory over the Orioles. The only hits for the Orioles came from the bats of Justin Clarke, Grant Ful- ford, Tyler Young, Mike Lusty and Wade Picked. On Saturday in Peterborough, a clutch two-run single by Tyler Young in extra innings was the difference as the Orioles Orioles came back to tie the series wiih an 8-6 victory. Jake Maguire led the offence with two hits, while other hits came from Andy Hamilton, Grant Fulford, Mike Lusty, Justin Ruf and Pete Downs. Justin Clarke chipped in with three RBI's for the Orioles as well. On the mound, the Clarke brothers combined for the Oriole victory. Justin Clarke pitched a respectable six innings giving up six runs (four of them earned) on six hits, allowing nine walks and striking out seven. Twin brother Trevor picked up the win by shutting down the Tigers over the final two innings, allowing no runs and striking out three. ; The team is sponsored by Maguire Water Supply and coached by Doug Picked, with assistance from Ian Fulford and Mark Young. By Brad Kelly Staff Writer Rudi Barrese, of Courtice, has left for Tyler Junior College in Texas on a soccer scholarship. COURTICE - Although there was a lot of uncertainty awaiting Rudi Barrese when his plane touched down in Texas last week, there was one thing he could guarantee. The stories that have reached his Courtice home about the rattlesnake rattlesnake hunts that students in the Lone Star State participate in on a regular basis will be something something that he steers clear of. "I'm definitely going to stay away from that," he said with a laugh. Barrese left last week for Tyler, Tex., where he was to begin a two-year soccer scholarship scholarship at Tyler Junior College. Having not visited the school during the customary recruiting process, the Courtice resident was eager to see the facilities and get introduced to his new teammates. The one thing he knows for sure is the soccer program at the school is a strong one. Tyler Junior College has won the national championship four of the last six years. "The coach saw some videotape videotape of me playing, liked what he saw, and wanted to know if I was interested in going down to play," said Barrese, who enlisted the services of the Recruiting Agency of Canada to help him land the scholarship. A striker on the Oshawa Kicks under-21 provincial- league team, Barrese will be counted on to provide some offence in Texas. Last season, the 20-year-old finished second overall in league scoring. Excited about the opportunity to play in Texas, the St. Stephen's Secondary School graduate admitted there will be a period of adjustment before he is able to settle into a routine. "I'll have to adjust to the climate climate and the lifestyle. But the reason I decided to go down is because they have such a good team and the program has a lot of credibility." Throughout his minor soccer career, Barrese has played for Oshawa, Darlington Youth Soccer Soccer Club, Courtice Select and with the provincial program. Before he is done, there may be a couple of other uniforms he will wear. He is negotiating with North'Carolina State to transfer to the Division I school after this season if he plays up to expectations expectations in Texas. Beyond that, who knows? A pro career is something something he would like to pursue. "That (playing pro) is one of the reasons I'm going down to the States. If something comes up, I will definitely be interested," interested," he said. The junior college soccer season season runs from August to January, with playoffs and National Championships shortly after., Paralympic athlete off to Czech Republic NEWCASTLE - The reputation Paralympic athlete Jim Shaw has built over the years has followed him all the way to the Czech Republic.
