The local organization has plenty planned for Legion Week, which runs from Sunday, Sept. 19 to Saturday, Sept. 25. Quite a number of the events are aimed at getting a new crowd into the Legion's building at 109 King St. E. 'The Legion is not a closed organization," organization," says Roger Leetooze, who does public relations and youth education for the local branch. "It's a major service club within the community." The group, which will celebrate its 70th anniversary in Bowmanville next year, raises funds for a number of causes, causes, including Lakeridge Health Bow- manville. More importantly, the Legion works to ensure each generation of Canadians recalls the men and women who have served their country. "The Legion is not about glorifying military conflict. Our objective is to remember people who made the supreme sacrifice," says Mr. Leetooze. Bowmanville's Legion Branch currently currently has about 1,000 members. But president Steve Oke says the group needs some new "younger, active members. members. There's a lot of fun here if people' wanted to come," says Mr Oke. Membership in the organization used to be limited to those who had served, or were related to someone who served, either in the military or with a police force. But recently, the organization has added a new type of member. People who do not have a direct link can apply as an affiliate member, though they do not receive voting rights within the organization, organization, nor can they run for office. The Legion also includes a Ladies' Auxiliary, which raises funds for charities. Mr. Leetooze says the organization has a lot to offer to new members. "The Legion provides a real social atmosphere for its members," he says, adding members can visit Legions across Canada, and, in fact, around the world, and always feel comfortable. The social hour begins at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, cribbage will be played, starting at 7:30 p.m. Afternoon darts takes place Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 1:30 p.m. Bingo is played Wednesday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, from 1 p.m. to closing time, the Legion offers an open house. The Ladies' Auxiliary will be serving a salad lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday's events include a meat roll at 6 p.m., and entertainment at 8:30 p.m. . Funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health is given directly to the hospital and is specifically for the cost of operating the facility. The Foundation serves a population of approximately 66,000 people in Clarington. The Foundation's role as fundraiser for Lakeridge Health Bowmanville increases in importance as resources from government funding shrink. We thank you for your support.
