Eagles want a return to playoffs By Brad Kelly Sports Editor Mike Posavad knew what lie was getting into when he accepted the head coaching position with the Bowmanville Eagles this past summer. He was inheriting a hockey club that failed to qualify for the playoffs a season ago after finishing ninth overall in the Eastern Conference. And over the course of the season, the Eagles managed to do the unthinkable - use three different different head coaches. Not an ideal situation to step into as a rookie head coach in the Provincial Junior League. But so far, things appear to be running much more smoothly than a year ago. And by Christmas, Posavad hopes that the true talent on this year's hockey club will be evident to the fans. "By Christmas, I want this team to be playing a consistent brand of hockey. That's the gauge we are going to use," lie said as the Eagles embarked on another season this past weekend. They lost to Thornhill 11-6, but managed to defeat Syracuse Syracuse by a 4-2 score. "In the last 10 games of the season, that's when we want to be peaking as we head into the playoffs." Making the playoffs seems like a bold predication, predication, but not out of the realm for this hockey club. Included in that group arc Ryan Jack- man, Seth Gray, Scan Haynes, Ted Marks, Jason Churly, and Josh Bade. Bade, who is in his fourth season with the Eagles, is also expecting a return to the post-season. "We have a lot more experience this year," said the 19-ycar-old captain. "The guys we have back from last year should be able to step it up a notch this season." Bade also likes the way the new players arc fitting in with the veterans. "We don't have any problems in the dressing room with guys getting along. We're trying to take a family approach this year and stick together," added Bade, who is a former OHL draft pick of Windsor. With harmony in the dressing room, all that is left to do is improve on last year's record of 18 wins, 27 losses, and 6 tics. That responsibility lies on the shoulders of Posavad. His credentials as a player player are impressive. He was a member of the Peterbor ough Petes from 1984-88, and was the first pick of the St. Louis Blues in the 1982 NHL entry draft. After coaching minor hockey in Peterborough, he made the jump to the junior ranks with the Eagles. "Coaching is coaching," he said of the comparison between minor hockey and junior. "Tlicrq, arc things that players have to work on at every level, and that's why we (the coaching staff) arc here." Though he won't go as far to predict a championship championship this season, Posavad is confident that his team will be able to compete with the best clubs. "This team is going to challenge," said the 35- ycar-old Millbrook resident. "We arc going to have to do the little things to win games. I'm sure our efforts will be rewarded on the scoreboard." Bowmanville arc grouped in the Eastern Conference Conference with Bancroft, Cobourg, Kingston, Lindsay, Lindsay, Peterborough, Port Hope, Syracuse, Trenton, and Wellington. Eight of the 10 teams advance to the playoffs. CAPTAIN FADE - Bowmanville Eagles captain Josh Bade (#24) will be expected to provide some leadership for the hockey club this season.
