) I He'd give away his shirt AND HE DID - Golf shirts donated by the Municipality of Clarington were a big hit at the Memorial Hospital Foundation of Bowmanville golf tournament last week which raised about $20,000. Doug James presents Mayor Diane Hamre with one of the golf shirts, as a token of appreciation of the sponsorship. Each participant in the tournament received one of the shirts as part of the day's package. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 22,1999 Page A7 This group waits for a sign Logo contest open to community By Jennifer Stone Staff Writer NEWCASTLE -- The Samuel Wilmot Nature Area Advisory Committee is waiting waiting for a sign. But the group is not expecting some sort of signal from above. Instead, the committee committee is turning to area residents residents to help establish a logo for the Newcastle nature area. A contest to find a logo will run from Oct. 1 to Nov. 30. The first place prize is $100. Second and third place winners will receive a t- shirt featuring their design. The nature area is made up of 77 hectares which lie between the Canadian National National Railway and Lake Ontario, bound on the east by Toronto Street, and on the west, by Cobbledick Road. Clarington received the title ,to the lands in May, 1996. The site was the subject of an Environmental Management Management Plan Study, which was endorsed by Clarington's council in 1998. The plan will be managed and implemented with the assistance of interested interested citizens, local interest organizations, and other groups. "We're looking at things such as replanting certain meadows on the site so the growth there is natural to that area. We want to regenerate the area back to a more natur- BOB WILLSHER 'We want it to truly be a community-wide activity.' al environment," says Bob Willsher, public relations spokesperson for the committee. committee. Another planned project project calls for stabilization of the banks of Wilmot Creek. After the logo is chosen, says Mr. Willsher, it will be used on signs, information publications, and communications communications within the community. A special information package about the logo contest contest will be sent to all area schools. Mr. Willsher says, "There's a lot of value in children children becoming involved." The nature area and related projects "tie back to the curriculum. curriculum. There's a whole Logo contest for Newcastle nature area From Oct. 1 to Nov. 30 $100 first prize range of things a classroom teacher can use to relate back to the curriculum." Mr. Willsher believes it's important to get young people involved with the nature area. "We want to make the generation generation that counts for this particular site aware of it," he says. But that doesn't mean school children will be the only people allowed to take part in the contest. "We want it to truly be a community-wide activity," says Mr. Willsher. Anyone interested in more information on the Samuel Wilmot Nature Area can contact contact their local library to see documents relating to the site. Submissions to the logo contest should include a brief written description to explain the design.
